It was strange to have Naoto sitting next to him while the store was open, but she was still in a dependence phase, clinging to him like glue. Kanji didn’t mind at all after a week, enjoying her company even if, in her condition, it attracted more women into the shop. She held polite conversations with them and even managed sales while he sewed next to her.

“I’m due soon so I’m doing what I can now to help out,” Naoto said calmly, leaning against Kanji’s arm. He paused in his stitching, grinning at the contact.

“Been more than enough,” he said, lowering the fabric. She smiled as the woman she had been talking to giggled. She was comfortable in this spot… but…

She frowned, looking disgruntled. She placed a hand on her stomach, blinking. Kanji, who had picked up on his sewing, stopped again, “Naoto? You alright?”

“I don’t know… it feels like…”

“Those Hicks contractions again?” Kanji asked, tilting his head.

Naoto shook her head, panting, “I… I don’t know… but they feel different…! Eh!”

“Oh my…” the woman said, pulling out her phone. Kanji set aside his sewing before wrapping his arms carefully around Naoto as she continued to pant quickly. The woman was answered in a moment, “Hello? Dr. Tsumoto? I’m over at Tatsumi Textiles. Yes, I know it’s my day off, but we have someone going into labor. Could you send an ambulance? … Thank you.”

The woman hung up, “It will be here in a few minutes. Until then, Tatsumi-san, try evening your breathing. Tatsumi-kun, cradle her stomach more and help ease the pain. There’s a chance her water might break so don’t panic. I’ll clear the store…”

“T-Thanks…” Kanji said, nodding to the woman. She nodded as well before turning away. His attention went back to Naoto at once as she grabbed his arm tightly, squeezing as hard as she could. He grimaced, but his hands remained at her abdomen, rubbing in small circles, “Deeper breaths Naoto.”

“M-Mh-hm…!”

Sirens were wailing nearby and the Nurse had just ushered the last customer out, changing the sign to close before walking outside. The ambulance must have arrived.

All those emotions from the beginning, her pain, her anger, her feeling of abandonment, it all came back during the ride over and in the room for hours upon hours. She clung to his arm, yelled at him, cried and he just whispered gently to her, trying to keep himself from snapping. He had to be strong… he couldn’t lose his head now… and then…

Crying.

Not hers… but an infant…

“It’s a girl, Tatsumi-san. Congratulations,” the doctor said. Kanji’s face brightened and he kissed Naoto’s forehead, smiling, “You did it, Naoto.”

“U-Uh huh…” Naoto replied, smiling weakly. She was drained. The extent of the labor took its toll, but not so much that she couldn’t hold their crying infant. Ten tiny fingers and toes, bright eyes and blue fuzz on her hair, their baby continued to cry until a nurse assisted Naoto to feeding. Kanji brushed Naoto’s hair, watching the babe feed while the doctors moved around.

Nothing behind them really mattered… it was just the three of them now…

... crappy ending. I'm sorry! *runs*
