Week twenty-five…

Naoto had at least twelve more weeks until she was due and for now, she was resting. Kanji, on the other hand, was setting up shop for the day. Nothing to worry about… nothing to worry abo-

He heard something scrapping against the floor and paused arranging the new animal toys. He walked down the hall, frowning as he entered the bedroom. Naoto was awake and… moving the side table across the room.

“Uhm… Naoto, what’re you doing?” Kanji asked, blinking as she stopped. She looked back at him, but shrugged her shoulders after a minute. He raised an eyebrow, “Wha…?”

“I just… I think the room arrangement should be different. If the baby is going to be in the room with us, there needs to be more room,” she said, looking down at the futon. She was shifting on her feet, her hands resting on her bulging abdomen as she pondered where to move everything.

Kanji walked over, frowning, “You shouldn’t be on your feet.”

“I’m perfectly fine. Just help me move the futon,” Naoto replied, brushing him off as she moved to grab the futon.

He walked over, shaking his head quickly, “No, no, no! The doc said no bendin’. I can move it.”

“… Alright. Move it over to the right,” she said, looking over at the wall. He nodded and knelt down, grabbing the mattress and dragging it over to the right. The cover spilled off, but after he set it against the wall, he walked over and gathered the blankets.

Just as he was going to set them down, Naoto raised a hand, “Hold on… that leaves the window. We couldn’t place the cradle there… move it back.”

He didn’t say anything, but set the blankets down and dragged the futon back under the window while she walked over to the side table again. They really didn’t have much in the room, but it was enough to make it comfortable for both of them. Kanji had just made the bed when Naoto make a click with her tongue. This didn’t feel right.

“… no, we have an outlet over here…” she murmured, frowning, “… can you help me move the table over here.”

“Yeah, I got it.”

Kanji walked over and pushed the table over, blocking the outlet it. Naoto shook her head, “It still doesn’t feel right. I don’t want the outlet exposed, but I don’t want the baby by the window. Us being right by the window isn’t good either if someone tries to break in… and if it’s left open on a winter night, we’ll all get sick.”

“Then how ‘bout the bed go against the far wall and the cradle be placed in the corner?”

“Hm?”

Naoto watched as Kanji dragged the futon to the far wall and remade it again, “See? We’re here… and the kid can be there.”

“… Or maybe the cradle was throwing me off. Any ideas where to get a futon for an infant?” Naoto asked.

Kanji blinked, “What?”

“Mhmm, nothing. I’ll worry about it later…” Naoto replied, smiling faintly with a pink hue on her cheeks. She walked over to the futon and, with Kanji’s help, sat down, quite pleased with the room’s new arrangement. He chuckled and knelt down, kissing her forehead while a hand rubbed her belly. She shrunk away coyly with a giggle, but then cuddled against him, letting out a content sigh.

“Naoto, I have to go open the store… just call me if you need somethin’, ‘k?”

“Of course, Kanji-kun…”

With reluctance, she let him slip away.
