The laughter came uncalled as usual, earning her a sharp glance from
Chie. Yukiko used her hand to clamp her lips shut. It came out as a
series of unladylike snorts instead.

"Yukiko!" Chie pinched her arm.

"Mmalright." Yukiko took one, two, three deep breath. When she was
sure she wouldn't burst again she said, "Sorry, but I can't help but
find this whole thing very funny."

Chie's lips twitched. "Of course it is, but if we make too much noise
and someone discovers us..."

"Hey, senpai," Rise whispered, tugging at Yosuke's sleeve, "What time
did you write?"

Yosuke checked his watch then nervously looked around. "Should be any
minute now."

"Maybe she couldn't read your handwriting."

"Hey, gimme a break. That guy writes as legibly as chicken dancing on
an inkpad."

The laughter came again. Yukiko covered her mouth just in time to turn
it into snorts. Chie's look was a mix of pity and worry. "Sorry,"
Yukiko managed after a while.

"Shush, someone's coming!"

In unison they held their breath and flattened against each other. It
was late in January, so there were not too many bushes to hide
themselves, but they were lucky to find a tall evergreen with plenty
of shady areas and thick bushes around it. The fact that it was cloudy
didn't hurt either.

Most importantly, their hiding place provided a full view of the
pavilion and people coming or going.

"What the hell's he doing there?" Chie hissed.

"Shush!" said Yosuke, who looked paler at the sight of Naoto and Soji
coming their way. Yukiko held her breath. She knew Soji, knew that he
was ever helpful, especially towards their self-appointed
investigation team, but for the first time she wondered if they had
miscalculated his relationship with Naoto. It could ruin everything
when Kanji arrived as well.

She watched anxiously as Naoto paced around the pavilion while Soji
stood calmly to the side. Both of them looked solemn.

"Maybe your grandfather has another test in his mind," Soji said
quietly. Yukiko unconsciously leaned forward to hear better.

Naoto had stopped pacing and was now observing the path. "I think not.
Yakushiji-san wouldn't have lied when he said that was the end of th
game."

"If you say so," Soji said, rubbing his chin. "It looked like a man's
handwriting, so we can rule out your admirer from before."

There was a faint pink shade on Naoto's cheeks. "Yes. Yes. Yet at the
same time..." She trailed off, and to their horror began walking
towards their hiding spot. Yukiko didn't dare to breath, much less to
move. She could feel Chie's hands like a pair of sharp vices around
her arms. Naoto seemed to be distracted by the tree, but one close
look at the bushes and it's all over...

"Senpai? What are ya--Naoto?!"

"Oh, hello, Kanji."

Naoto turned around sharply; she looked surprised. "Tatsumi-kun?" She
quickly regained her composure, one hand resting on her hip. "You
wrote the letter?"

Poor Kanji looked flustered. "L-Letter? What letter?"

Naoto walked to Kanji. Yukiko released her breath. "Chie, you can let
go of me now." She didn't, but Yukiko had decided that Kanji and Naoto
demanded more of her attention.

Especially now that Naoto had brandished her letter in front of Kanji.
"I received this letter in my locker." Kanji leaned closer to the
letter, still wide-eyed. "Its content is a--invitation--to come to
Samegawa flood plains at precisely three o' clock." She pulled the
letter away; Kanji's eyes followed it, fell onto Naoto, and
immediately looked away. "The handwriting's patterns match that of the
common male population of Japan. Senpai and I came here and found you.
So did you or did you not write the letter?"

"B-But I..." Kanji's hands scrambled in his pockets. He pulled out a
piece of paper that was surprisingly very neatly folded. "I got the
same thing!"

"You did," said Soji. Kanji jerked around, most likely he had
forgotten that Soji was also around.

"I did! In my shoebox! Only that mine looked like a girl wrote it."

"Can I see that?"
