A knock sounded on the door, and Yosuke practically fell over himself running to answer. Souji was standing on the doorstep, hands in pockets and smiling slightly. "Hey, Yosuke. Nice apron."
What? Yosuke looked down at himself. Crap! He'd forgotten to--"Yeah, whatever, just come inside okay?" he snapped, yanking open the apron ties. "Dummy."
Souji said nothing - just kept smiling as he walked to the sofa and sat down. "Nothing better to do on Valentine's Day, huh?"
"Could say the same for you, dude. No girls to chase after?"
Souji shook his head. "Just Rise. And she's chasing me." He shifted in his seat, looking uncomfortable. "You didn't see me here, okay? I've been avoiding her all day."
Yosuke didn't know why, but he was practically grinning inside. He pointed at the wrapped box on the table. "I figured you'd be dateless"-- man, what a lie that was --"so Chie and I baked you something." He made sure to put emphasis on Chie's name too. Otherwise this might be kinda creepy. Totally wasn't him.
Souji opened the box. Inside were twelve neatly arranged golden brown cookies, on a bed of tissue paper and each one dusted with sugar. "...Wow, Yosuke. These are amazing." He looked up, one eyebrow raised. "I didn't know you could bake."
He realized then he just couldn't do it. Lying to Souji was just lame; they were buddies. Better to be honest. "Uh...I didn't actually make them."
Souji's face broke into a wide smile. "Yeah, I know. Nanako likes these. Picks them at Junes all the time."
Great, so now he looked like a total idiot. Yosuke couldn't help but feel he'd screwed this up big time. "Yeah, well, I was trying to be nice, right? Does it really matter if I bought them?" He was babbling now, and dude, he didn't even know why this was so important to him. Just Souji, right? "It was either that or give you the crap I made, and that stuff was seriously bad! Mystery Food X bad! I like you way too much to--"
"Like me?" Souji looked at him carefully, grey eyes softer than usual.
Wait, wait! That wasn't what he'd meant to say at all. "Uh...just...y'know. We're friends, right?" He started running his hand through his hair. Why was he so nervous?
"You sure that's all?"
"Completely sure. I'm not like that, no way, and you're not--" Yosuke was just getting into full flow when Souji leaned across the table and kissed him. Wasn't a peck on the cheek either; this was a full, on-the-lips, I-like-you-in-a-special-way kiss. Definitely not a buddy kiss. Did those even exist? And what was--
Souji broke away before Yosuke had time to sort out his thoughts. He was grinning, one hand against Yosuke's face. "Then I guess that was unnecessary?"
"I....I..." His mind was scrambled. He did the same as always; blew it off as a joke. No way did Souji mean it. "Y-you might've said something sooner, dude, then I wouldn't have wasted my afternoon baking." Souji just rolled his eyes, and pulled Yosuke back towards him, kissing him again - this time even deeper.
Brought together by Mystery Food X. It was totally dumb. But at the same time, his lips against Souji's, Yosuke decided it didn't matter - just like it didn't matter if he was that way or not, or that he wasn't sure. It was Souji.
Eventually they both broke away for air. Souji smirked at him. "Happy Valentine's Day, Yosuke."
"...you are so lame, dude." Yosuke replied - but he couldn't wipe the smile from his face.
