"--udying, I bet."
There are voices. No. A single voice. It pulls at the edges of your subconscious and you waken slowly but don't yet open your eyes. You haven't stirred, so your company is unaware that you're back in the world of the living. He continues to talk, and you realize the voice belongs to Yousuke. That's right. You were with him just before...
"Not that you even need to study much. I don't understand how you can be so good at everything. It's hardly fair. Share some of the skill, man."
It takes you a bit of time to realize that Yousuke isn't speaking to someone else in the room. He's speaking to you. From the sound of it, he doesn't even expect you to respond. You don't dare open your eyes. If you do, he'll stop talking, and you very much want to know what else he has to say when he thinks you can't hear him.
But perhaps you've made a movement you're unaware of. He's quiet now, for the most part, though every few moments you can hear him shift in his seat uncomfortably. He's sitting close to you, and you're laying down. A bed. The infirmary, then. He must have brought you here.
You wait in the silence for a time, and you might have fallen asleep again. It's hard to tell. It's a warmth on your hand that causes you to focus again. You're surprised the contact didn't cause you to give a start and make him realize you were awake. His hand is on yours, fingers interlocking with your own. Is this still Yousuke? The thought that your watch might have changed while you were out for a moment crosses your mind, but the hand is too large, too rough to belong to any of the girls and not quite large enough to be Kanji's. No, it's still Yousuke. The loud sigh that follows makes this even more apparent.
And then he's talking again, and closer. You don't recall hearing him move from the chair to your bedside, but he's there now. "You'll be okay, right?" His voice is a shaky whisper. "Tell me I'm getting worked up over nothing and we've just run you ragged."
You don't say anything, and it's not difficult in your weariness to keep your breathing slow and even.
"Tell me you haven't become like... like everyone else out there. You're too strong for that."
You know what he means. The fog is causing people in town to become physically ill. They don't want to believe that it's actually the fog itself causing it, but you and your friends know the truth. That's why you've been training so hard. You wouldn't let something like that keep you down. You'll all stop Adachi together. Some part of you is telling you to open your eyes and ease his worries now. Tell him you just need a bit of rest.
But you continue to remain silent.
