The Prince stood up. “Then let us go and defe-“
“Let me help,” said the young girl. She stood up as well, a hand on the Prince’s sleeve. “Let me once again help my people.” It was then that the Prince realized that this was, indeed, the Princess, who had come to acknowledge her own strength, and wanted to become useful, and really did love her land very, very much, despite what she said. A fire burned in her, and the Prince nodded, slipping her hand into the Princess’. They went to join the cavalry.
“You betray me?” asked the cornered Empty King, upon seeing the Princess. There was rage in his expression, but nothing in his eyes. He laughed, a cruel and echoing sound. From his days in hiding, his clothes were torn and stained. He had only grown more bitter, more lonely, more empty. “They always betray me,” he muttered, “There is nothing good here, it is a kingdom full of traitors and idiots and whores! It is a mercy that I kill you all.”
“You are wrong,” said the Princess. “This is a kingdom full of people who want to live, wonderful, loving people who want to see the sun, but you have brought everlasting clouds into our skies, blinded with your selfishness. Because of that, we will destroy you.” And they did, the Prince and the Princess and the cavalry, bound together with friendship and encouraged by the truth of the Princess’ words. They defeated the Empty King, who merely laughed like a broken record, and disappeared because there was never really anything inside.
The Princess’ shoulders shook, and the Prince, who had still not let go of her hand, gently squeezed the delicate fingers in her grip. Now, the Princess cried and smiled at the same time. “I didn’t mean it, you know,” she said. “I don’t want to leave. I love this place, and I love my people. Thank you for saving them. Thank you for saving me.”
The Prince smiled. “I swore to protect you, after all. I know that you love this kingdom. I only have one thing to ask in return.”
“Anything,” breathed the Princess.
The clever one raised her brow and smiled knowingly, pulling down her cap. She shooed the rest of the cavalry away, though the quiet one seemed to understand without being told, and the others simply protested. (“Chie-chaaaaaaan,” whined the non-human one, though he was also ultimately herded away like the others.) The Prince smiled, twining their fingers. “Allow me to stay, for every Princess needs a Prince, and every Prince a Princess, and let us see your kingdom restored together.”
Then, what is there to say? As always, the way it ends is like this: and they lived happily ever after.
