The classroom's hot and sticky and about the last place on earth Yosuke wants to be right now. Seriously, why does he have to be here? He'd blame Souji for not helping him pass his exams, except he doesn't exactly have a history of outstanding academic accomplishments. Besides, by his reckoning Souji spent the last month "studying" with at least three other girls. Ranking up his knowledge or however the hell he put it. The guy's his best friend, but Yosuke'll never understand him.

The only other person here - of course - is Chie. She flunked out, same as last summer. Figures, since there's no "Kicking Guys In The Nads" exam. Small mercies, right?

She's staring out the classroom window; she should be writing a history essay, same as him, but of course Morooka's left the room so neither of them are going to bother. Except he's so bored he's actually considering picking up his pen; can't have that. If there's one thing Yosuke lacks it's an instinct for self-preservation, and it's that deficiency - combined with sheer boredom - that makes him start flicking gum wrappers at the back of Chie's head.

She takes the first two pretty well; just ignores him. The third, less so. "Quit it, Yosuke!" She swivels round to face him. "Bad enough I'm stuck here, let alone with you."

He just rolls his eyes. "C'mon, Chie. Got to do something or I'm gonna die here." He sighs, and flicks another gum wrapper in her general direction. "They'll find me here next semester, a dusty sunbleached skeleton."

"With a snapped neck," mutters Chie. "Stop throwing those things at me, jerk!"

"So ladylike. Hanging out with Yukiko's really rubbed off, huh?" Yosuke's skating close to the edge here, but he's bored out of his mind and it always brings out the worst in him. Or the dumbest part. Maybe both.

Chie gives him the look; a fierce stare that promises endless worlds of pain. "Shut up, Yosuke. Don't make me come kick your ass!"

"See, that's what I mean. What proper girl goes around doing that?"

Her cheeks flush. "H-hey! What are you...you shouldn't say things like that!"

"Look, all I'm saying is that I've never been kicked in the balls by Yukiko." Though the image is interesting - sort of a horribly painful turn-on. Yosuke quickly shakes the thought out his head.

Oh crap. Chie's walking over to him now, and he's not sure whether to run out the classroom or hide under the desk - till he realizes just how hurt she looks. "Yosuke, you idiot." If he didn't know better, he'd swear she was about to cry. "You can't compare me to Yukiko, she's..." She trails off, and looks away. "I'm not like her, I know."

He's just kidding, so why's he feel so guilty? "C'mon, it's not like I was serious. I mean, you're cool! Easy to talk to." She still won't look at him. "Yukiko's kinda scary for most guys. The Amagi Challenge, right?"

Chie smiles, but it's bitter. "Yeah, I'm cool. Just one of the guys, right?"

Yosuke can't help but feel he's in a minefield; one wrong step and, boom, there goes his head. "Well, yeah. You like sports, you watch kung-fu movies, you like going to Aiya...the fun stuff. You're a girl, but you're cool." And when he thinks about it she really is, though right now she looks like she's either gonna kill him or burst into tears. He doesn't quite know why. "You beating me up all the time kinda sucks, but as a whole you're really neat."

"Yosuke...you ever stop to wonder why I do that?" Chie's looking at him, head tilted slightly, arms folded around her.

He blinks. What sort of question is that? "I dunno. Because I'm a moron?"

Chie giggles at that; he doesn't hear it often and it's actually kinda nice. "Well, duh. About time you figured that out." She smiles again, and this time it's genuine. "But...it's not the only reason."

Yosuke's about to ask what other reason there could possibly be when Chie leans down and kisses him.
