He folded up the letter, mouth dry, and stuck it in his shirt pocket, sitting heavily down upon the couch with hands folded over his chin. Nanako had already gone to bed--it was early, only just past eight, but she got tired so very easily these days... Dojima sucked in a breath, then let it go in a heave before crossing the room to the phone and punching in a number he had called so many times that his fingers knew it by muscle memory. The dial tone rang once, twice.

"Hello, Adachi speaking!" came the all-too-familiar cheerful voice partway through the third ring.

Guilt stabbed Dojima like a spear through his ribs. What the hell was he doing? What was he going to ask--'Hey, sorry to call out of the blue, but by any chance did you somehow mastermind all those murders and kidnappings two years ago?' Sure, confronting him and giving him the chance to clear his name himself was better than letting this doubt fester, but...

"Hello?" Adachi repeated, after a moment of silence.

"Sorry," Dojima said hurriedly. "I just... uh..."

"Oh, Ryotaro." His tone, amused. Dojima clenched his jaw and suppressed a shudder. It'd taken several months before the two of them had taken to calling each other by their first names while off the clock--and, especially, on the bed, as it were--and it had been one of those small things that had made him happy, but now...

"Don't tell me you're getting all shy on me all of a sudden," Adachi continued, oblivious (as surely he always was) to anything wrong. "Let me guess--you want me to come over?"

Dojima laughed weakly. "Hah... you read my mind..."

There was a pause then. Then, "Is everything okay, Ryotaro? You sound like something's bothering you."

"To tell you the truth, not really," Dojima admitted, guiltily relieved that Adachi had named the problem for him. "I really need to talk to you about something important. Let's meet at the gazebo near the Samegawa riverbed, all right?"

"Oooh, something you don't want Nanako-chan to overhear, huh? All right," his partner replied, voice rolling with good humor. He sobered as he continued, "So I'll see you there in, say, twenty minutes?"

"Let's make it thirty," Dojima replied. "The fog's pretty bad out tonight."
