Today had been a shitty day.
Kanji had vowed to Souji that he would change himself. For the team, for Ma, and for everyone, but damnit, it was kind of hard when people didn't seem to notice. Sure, the Aiya guy didn't seemed to mind when he promised to "renovate his ass", but his attempt to have a rational conversation with a cop ended in utter failure.
Well, it wasn't his fault! Bastard was accusing him of harassing little kids and bullying or some other bullshit, and Kanji just told 'em straight up that he was wrong. Forcefully. He was just telling the truth... with his fist.
Souji was elsewhere today, probably hanging out with someone else, so Kanji had no one else left to talk to as he glumly and angrily sat in the little covered area by the Riverbanks. Since he was feeling down...
He glanced to the left, and then the right to make sure no smartasses were watching, and then Kanji opened up the little silver locket he carried around. He was instantly comforted by the cute image of a kitten, a sweet ball of fluff that stared up at him with soulful eyes. Kanji could already feel his mood lifting, a smile coming to his lips.
"... Mew, mew," He cooed, pretending that the cute little kitten was on his lap and playing with one of the buttons on his jacket. Oh, what an adorable thing it was! Kanji always wanted a cute little cat, though he thought that mighta been a girly thing. He was just so busy kicking biker gang ass and now, dealing with the murders, that he didn't really have time to devote to a cat. But ... they were just so cute!
"Meow..."
"What're you meowing at, Kanji?"
"AHHHHH! WHAT THE HELL?!" A small voice snapped him from his reverie, and Kanji was up in an instant. "THIS ISN'T WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE, I AIN'T - Oh, it's you, uh... Nanako-chan."
Nanako was just smiled cheerfully, looking around for whatever it was Kanji had been meowing at. Actually, she looked a little excited, as if she found something that she was searching for.
"Oh! Did you find the kitten's mommy? Are you calling for her?"
"Huh?" Kanji blinked. Kitten's mommy? Though he couldn't help but feel a little guilty when Nanako's face fell as the young girl realized that he had no idea what she was talking about. "Uh, sorry, I got no idea what you're talking about. You looking for a cat?"
The girl nodded, pointing towards a bush that was near the hill sloping down to the riverbed. "There's a little kitty in the bushes that I found when I was walking home from school today! I thought maybe his mommy went off to get something for him to eat, but I've been waiting here for a long time now... and I gotta get back home soon, so I'm trying to find his mommy."
Kanji's eyes widened at Nanako's story, looking over to the bush she pointed out. A kitten?! In there?!
"Seriously?! Nanako-chan, lemme see! That kitten needs our help!"
"Yeah!"

Indeed, as Nanako had said, there was a little kitten lying in the bushes. He mewed happily when he saw his friend come back, with a new friend in tow. Far from recoiling in fear like most people tended to do when faced with Kanji, the kitten happily lumbered out of the bush to greet him. As Kanji bent down, the little creature happily brushed up against his fingers and purred.
Needless to say, Kanji was smitten.
"Aww! He likes you!" Nanako smiled, pleased that the kitty had someone else to play with. Kanji didn't seem to hear her, gently raking his fingers through the kitten's fur with a smile on his face that seemed to grow wider and wider.
"Do you think his mommy will come back soon?"
"Huh?" Finally, Kanji seemed to be aware that Nanako was speaking to him, blinking and looking up from his adorable, fuzzy distraction. "O-Oh yeah. This little guy s'all alone, right?"
Poor thing... well, there was no way in hell Kanji was just gonna leave the little guy here. He couldn't, not with it purring like a motor and staring up at him with those big, adorable, kitty eyes... No, he had to! He must!
"Leave it to me! I'll take care of this dude. You should get going, Nanako-chan. Yer big bro's gonna get worried," Kanji grinned, gently scooping up the kitten in his arms. It only purred even more, placing it's little paws on his shoulder and making the first year's grin get even wider. "Once we get home, I'm gonna stuff this guy's stomach with so much fish, he'll explode!"
Kanji blinked as he realized his reassuring statement to Nanako didn't quite come out right.
"Uh, I mean -"
"Yay!" Nanako seemed to get what he meant, clapping her hands together. "Thank you so much, Kanji! Mr. Kitty's gonna be happy now!" She started down the path, turning around to wave at Kanji and 'Mr. Kitty', before running down as the sun started to set.
"... Mr. Kitty, huh?" Kanji looked down at the kitten again, the grin coming back twofold. "Yeah, Mr. Kitty, let's get going on home."
