Damn it, he'd told Daisuke he hadn't wanted to see 'Blood, Sweat, Tears and Baseball'. Sports flicks had never been Yosuke's thing -- seriously, every last one boiled down to the same thing: bunch of sweaty guys grunting and clawing their way to the Big Game, bonding and learning Important Life Lessons about Friendship and Teamwork and blah blah blah. And last time he'd checked, there weren't any baseball cheerleaders, so that potential perk was out.

...Buuuuut it was probably just as well that he hadn't actually wanted to watch the movie, given the extra company they'd picked up.

Funny, really. Just when you think you know a guy, life threw you a curveball. Or, you know, two. 'Cause here he'd been friends with Souji for months -- confided in the guy, got rescued, even hugged by his new good ol' buddy. And that was all fine and dandy, because hey! Souji was a stand-up guy! The kinda guy who could, say, lead you into a freaked-out TV world to save people from the worst parts of themselves... for example. And he was proud to follow him, proud to call him 'Leader', and all sorts of other stuff that was really embarrassing to admit.

But -- Risette. He'd been dating Risette -- and he knew Rise had this weird kinda thing going on with her whole pop idol identity right now, but fuck it -- Souji was dating Risette and hadn't told him. Hadn't said one word to him -- Yosuke! His so-called best friend--!

And not only Risette--! Oh, no-ho-ho, that would've been too easy. Sure, he was pissed -- for God's sake, Souji hadn't even been a fan before she came to town! -- but hey. He could cope. After all, Rise really liked Souji -- that'd been obvious from the start. Hell, he'd been wondering why Souji wasn't making a move... (ironic, yeah, but how the hell was he supposed to know...?)

But he wasn't just dating Rise. Turned out there was another girl on the side -- Yumi, was it? Okay, he didn't know her nearly as well as he did Rise, but hey, it wasn't like she was some pop superstar, right? Sure, she was kinda pretty, if you liked 'em tall and lean, but...! Risette!

How could you have Risette fawning over your every move and still wanna pick up a little something-something on the side?!

So, yeah. Yosuke wasn't too thrilled with his 'partner' right now.

...Still, a tiiiiiiny part of him tucked waaaaaay in some back corner of his head thought the whole thing was absolutely fucking hilarious. And said tiiiiiiny part kept pointing out in this really smug, really sarcastic tone that hey -- fair's fair. Yosuke's flaws and failings got paraded out for Souji to see, way back when... wasn't it about time he got to see that Souji wasn't so goddamned 'perfect'?

Souji sure didn't look much like his usual calm, collected self right now. Actually, he looked damned determined to push through the back of his seat, despite it proving sturdy and well-constructed at the moment. Not that Yosuke could blame him, really.

...Well, okay... maybe a little. ...Maybe a bit more than a little. But hell, dude was flanked -- Rise to his right, Yumi to his left, both girls glaring right through him to size each other up. What kind of friend would Yosuke be if he didn't offer his buddy a little support?

...He'd probably be like Daisuke, actually. He'd taken the aisle seat, opting for a nice, clear escape route. He also had his gaze firmly locked on the screen, too -- after all, he'd actually wanted to watch this retread.

Not him, though. Yosuke was here to provide moral support in Souji's time of need! ...Mainly by sitting by Rise, between her and the coward studiously pretending they weren't here at all. Partnership aside, he wasn't stupid enough to try and get between a woman scorned and her probably-exboyfriend.

(And no, that wasn't just wishful thinking on his part. Probably not, anyway. And hey, in the Game of Love, it was perfectly acceptable to catch rebounds.)

"Senpai~~~"

Rise's whisper was honey-sweet, melodic and absolutely overflowing with syrupy goodness... and not directed at him, unfortunately. No, it was all for Souji, and Yosuke didn't have to see her face to instinctively know she was giving him that smile. The same easy, darling smile she'd graced his 'partner' with from day one, lashes lowered juuust enough to highlight the extra bit of warmth in her eyes, candy-pink lips parted and glistening and begging you to watch them shape every last word.

Yumi was staring straight ahead, supposedly watching the snorefest onscreen -- Yosuke's eyesight was good enough to catch her eyes rolling, though, and the way she mouthed a mocking, silent echo of her rival. Blasphemy!

But Rise either didn't see or didn't care -- probably the former, for Souji was all she had eyes for right now. Souji, who was still valiantly (or insanely) trying to merge with his chair even while she shifted closer, leaning in and tilting her head just so. Actually, he was kind of surprised she hadn't crossed the armrest yet -- a quick glance over revealed she hadn't even put her hand over his; their arms were pressed together, but Souji's fingers were currently locked over plastic in a death grip, and amazingly, she wasn't prying those flushed-white knuckles open just yet.

Wow. She was pissed.

But her hair breached the gap easily -- the very edge of her pigtails teasing Souji's shoulder, bobbing with her ever-so-innocent laughter, and Yosuke silently applauded her acting skills, pretending the movie was actually entertaining. Not to mention the whole pretending she wasn't raring to tear the intruder a new one... no, anyone just looking at her would've assumed this was just a perfectly normal date, just her and her beloved boyfriend... (And yeah, okay, that still hurt just a little, and was Souji insane?)

Far as he was concerned, Yumi just couldn't compete.

So yeah, maybe Yosuke was just a little caught up in watching Rise, so he didn't actually pay much attention to the other girl at first. He was too engrossed in the wonderful performance Rise was giving... and yeah, okay, maybe he was searching for flaws in that, too. Just... any sort of hint that this was just a game to Rise now, that she was teasing and nothing more -- a bit of punishment before leaving her ex-boyfriend aching for her forgiveness, ditching him for someone a little more faithful... a little more devoted...

Someone who wouldn't squeak like that.

Now that wasn't a sound he'd ever expected to hear Souji make, so of course he glanced over then -- and yeah, maybe he was smirking a little, 'cause that tiny voice was gloating and he couldn't help but...

And then the white of Yumi's sleeve caught his eye, especially since it wasn't on her armrest anymore. No, it stretched down and over the barricade, slicing through the darkness of No Man's Land and coming to rest...

...Guh.

...Okay. Now he could kinda see why Souji might've been tempted to stray.

Because that looked experienced -- just...! The way her hand moved, sure and practiced -- and tight, maybe a little too tight, funny how he'd never dreamed that was possible before now, but then again, Yosuke hadn't ever expected to see so many different facets of his partner. Never thought he'd see Souji's eyes open that wide, or his knuckles turning bone-white against the grips, or biting the inside of his lip to keep another fricking squeal from blowing their cover.

And Yumi -- damn, Yumi still wasn't looking over! She was 'watching' the movie just as intently as Rise, and the only thing giving her away was how her hair swayed back and forth in time with her shoulder, the smirk she was sporting, even with her gaze fixed forward.

A high-pitched squeal pierced the air, and it took Yosuke a few seconds to realize it wasn't Souji. Mainly because Rise's hand flashed out then, lashing against her rival's in a bitchslap that probably outdid Chie's best strike -- and that made Souji squeal. And Daisuke all but fly out of his seat, stumbling back into the aisle even though he was nowhere near the action -- guy had no guts, that was for sure.

Yumi didn't let go. Yumi's head whipped around, and she snarled.

Rise hissed, fingers of her other hand curling into claws that she dug into Souji's shoulder.

...Guts were overrated anyway.

"Sorry, partner," and Yosuke jerked out a half-wave while backing into the aisle. "You're on your own."

So long as he felt guilty over the panicked look Souji shot him, Yosuke figured that balanced out the whole tinge of vindictive glee thing. And hey -- nothing wrong with picking your battles.
