“Hey, Kaaaaaaanjiii~”

Kanji groans, focuses on his work. Do it yourself, damnit.

“Kanji!”

Kanji jolts, sticking his thumb with the needle. He curses under his breath as he lays the dress aside, strolling down the hallways, sucking at the bead of blood.

“What? I’m tryin’ to fix your--”

His train of thought promptly crashes as he sees Rise peeking her head out of the bathroom door, her usual pigtails flattened down to a wet mess of red, forming a heavy fringe over Rise’s eyes. She’s looking up at him with a mischievous expression, and he suddenly finds that he can’t move, unable to do anything other than stare at her still-damp body, the curve of her shoulder glistening wet from where she’s holding onto the door.

“You’re out of towels, Kanji.”

“Oh? Uh, mrshh.” Kanji attempts. He takes his thumb out of his mouth and tries again. “M-my bad. I’ll go grab one for ya.”

Rise reaches out, grabs his wrist as he goes past. Kanji stops, a jolt of misplaced fear going through him as she keeps staring up at him, just covering herself with the door. He attempts words a few times, causing the girl to giggle.

“We can go to dinner anytime, Kanji-kun.” she stage-whispers. “Why don’t you come and dry me off first?”

“I-I thought you said there weren’t…”

“I lied.” she whisper-giggles, putting on a mock sultry voice. “I’m a bad girl, Kanji…”

Kanji glances down the hallway, up the hallway. He raises one hand to block the blood trickling from his nose as he hurries inside the bathroom, locking the door behind him. There’s more steam for awhile, and a lot of giggles, and Kanji’ll never be able to look at the toilet again without seeing Rise’s head bobbing, up and down, at his lap.

They decide to make a dinner of pudding cups and animal crackers. It’s Sunday tomorrow, after all.

They watch bad movies on the couch together that night, Kanji half-laying on the couch, Rise curled up against him in that extra blouse and skirt she’d brought over. Kanji briefly thinks that Chie-senpai wasn’t kidding; Rise really is dangerous. Pretty damn sure she doesn’t need a bodyguard, anyway. Which makes him…

“Hey, Kanji…?”

“H-huh? Uh, yeah?”

“…m’sorry I just kinda jumped on you before.”

Kanji blinks down at her, hand briefly stilling from stroking through her long, red hair. He’s glad she isn’t any lower, unable to feel just what thinking about that does to him. He manages a nervous laugh, hand trailing down to rub her shoulder.

“It’s fine. Ain’t like I can complain, yeah?”

She gives a tired giggle, shifting against him, eyes still closed. “Yeah. Thanks, Kanji.”

Thanks? …oh, yeah. Ain’t like he can look at the wall of the shower the same way, either; Rise, splayed up against it, Kanji on his knees in front of her, not knowing what the hell he was doing but judging by the sounds he was making, he was doing something right…

Kanji shakes his head. Back on target, man. He looks down at her, feet wiggling against the cushions, soft and sure against him.

“You wanna take my futon, Rise? S’getting pretty late, and I’m sure your grandma doesn’t want you walkin’ home this late…”

A murmured sound of ‘no’, Rise snuggling further into him. She tugs at his arm, brings it around her in an embrace, sighing happily as she falls back into that half-asleep daze, the TV playing on in front of them. Good thing it’s not raining, Kanji thinks, or there’s no way they’d be this relaxed.

Kanji wakes up the next morning to his mother turning off the TV, Rise drooling gently onto his shirt. She gives him a beatific smile, reaching down to brush the girl’s hair out of her face; Rise makes a tiny noise and shifts in her sleep, closer to Kanji.

“She’s a very special girl, Kanji.” his mother says.

“Yeah.” Kanji says.

They spend the rest of the day together, on the couch.

...mostly.
