"Why," the shadow breathed, trailing its splayed fingers over Souji's chest, "you don't even know if they're coming for you now. You'd say it doesn't matter- you'd say you wouldn't want them to risk themselves. But you're such a liar. If you're their leader, shouldn't they be running to find you? Shouldn't they be here now?"

Souji sighed, pressed his fingers against his eyelids till he saw sparks. "Stop."

He felt the shadow's glee. The anticipation and desire. It wanted him. Wanted to suck dry all his strength, pull his spirit out and possess it. It wanted to be the stronger one. Then- the only one.

"Stop," Souji murmured, and he felt so tired, "I know all of this already."

The shadow paused, stilled its arm to settle across Souji's collarbone.

He sighed, choosing his words with care- and the precision he used, even with himself, made him laugh. There was bitterness in it.

"I am afraid of everything you said," he admitted. "But that doesn't mean I regret it. That doesn't mean I won't do the same for others." Souji reached up and covered its hand. "So stop. And... thank you." He shook his head. "I hadn't realized I felt this way. I wouldn't admit that I had doubts, and I resented my friends. Now I know and... if I can feel this way," he grinned, "I'm more normal than I thought."

His shadow laughed, but there was a kinder edge to it. Something warm. Something human. It embraced him, wrapping its arms tight, tighter- and then faded, warmth in Souji's core, strengthening him, supporting him within. Ready to emerge and fight if it was needed. The warmth grew- the shape in his mind faded and changed...

Souji blinked. "Izanagi-"

Yes. But much more than that, now. Well done, it said. Well done indeed, my Other Self.

He faded, back into Souji's soul, quiescent and yet larger, much larger than the other personas drifting within. They had been silent, he belatedly realized, all this while.

He'd forgotten the can of soda too. Souji smiled, crouched down and retrieved the TaP, and stood, looking around. He should search for a way out.

Or, he mused as he felt the familiar tickling/poke of Rise's power, he could let his friends save him for once.

Lovely work, anon. It's a shame that no one else could witness Souji's fears, but then that might make him seem weaker and he wouldn't want that. It really does make him seem much more human. This was bittersweet and awesome, anon. Thanks for writing it.
