"I can't wait," Souji replied, and he couldn't remember the last time a single statement had rang so true.

According to Nanako's orders, Kanji entered first, since "she"” would already be home when Nanako returned from school. Souji prided himself on keeping a straight face for a grand total of six seconds before he ducked underneath the blanket, pulled the pillow over his face, and laughed a gut-shaking howler of a laugh that brought a scowl to Kanji's colorful face.
Dojima had purchased Nanako's makeup kit at a local toy store, which meant it didn't consist of any colors that a normal human being might actually wear on her face in public. That, combined with the fact that Nanako was seven and had mediocre hand-eye coordination, left Kanji looking like a drag queen clown on the run from the circus.
His carefully bleached hair had been sprayed with hair spray and doused in pink glitter that matched the rosy sparkle on his eyelids. Nanako - or maybe even Teddie; Souji wouldn't have been surprised to find out that was true - had apparently attempted pigtails, but Kanji's hair was just too short. He was left with two tufts of hair held up with heart-shaped barrettes sticking out of his head at opposing angles. A smear of neon pink blush streaked across his cheeks in a completely vertical line, and the bright red lipstick shone in a heart shape that made his lips look comically tiny.
But the kimono was what really brought tears to Souji's grey eyes.
It had once belonged to Yukiko, but she somehow set one of the sleeves on fire during one of her earlier, more dangerous forays into the cooking world. So she'd given it, in all of its singed glory, to Nanako. The bottom fell just below Kanji's knees, and even the whole sleeve, the one that hadn't been blackened beyond all recognition, barely reached the boy's elbow.
"K-Kanji," he finally managed to gasp out, "you look-"
"Shut up."
"I was going to say 'beautiful.'" Souji wiped the tears from his eyes and sat back up. "God, Kanji, who knew that one kiss at Escapade would lead to such a stable, loving relationship?"
Kanji cracked his knuckles dangerously, but the effect of it was lost on Souji, who'd just realized that his fingernails were tipped with pink glitter.
