She heard the familiar creak of the door opening and swinging shut, and Kisa's cheerful "Welcome to the Amagi Inn!" to whomever just entered. Yukiko simply smiled to herself. It was good that business was picking up again, even if it did keep her awfully busy...
"Yes, a room for one, please." That quiet voice cut through her thoughts, and she jerked in surprise, leaving a stray pen line over the page she was looking over. There was a sigh of frustration, but, oh, the page wasn't what was important right now! Yukiko stepped out of her office to look over at the desk and-
There he was, leaning gently against the counter, a duffel at his feet. Gray hair slightly mussed from travel - he had it cut differently, she noticed - and her heart (as cliché as it was; Chie would surely laugh at her) skipped a beat when he laughed quietly at a joke Kisa made as she paged through the book, looking for a suitable room.
Yukiko slipped behind the counter, laying a gentle hand on Kisa's arm. The woman looked over at her in surprise, and Yukiko kept her eyes just on her as she said gently. "Excuse me, but if you don't mind, I'll handle this."
Kisa glanced over at Souji, then looked back at Yukiko with a slowly spreading grin and a conspiratorial wink. "Of course. Excuse me." And with that she walked away, leaving Yukiko to take a deep breath as she rested her hands on the inn's guestbook. One more breath, and she finally looked up at him, a real smile on her face.
Even if his hair had changed, his eyes hadn't. "I guess they're still trying to set us up?" Souji said.
"It worked well enough last time, didn't it?" she responded, slipping easily back into old routines with him.
Souji laughed again, and Yukiko couldn't help a silly little smile. It was so easy for him to get her to laugh, so she liked being able to do the same. And it was reassuring that this much, at least, hadn't changed. Email and phone conversations just weren't the same as being face-to-face, and she could and did relax now that things seem to have picked up right where they ended.
"Still, the manager of the Amagi Inn personally comes just to give me a room. I feel honored."
"Manager-in-training, please. I'm not there yet." She had bent her head back over the book. "Ah, I think I'll give you the suite."
He shook his head immediately. "I'm doing well, but not that well," he smiled. "Something smaller is fine."
"No, don't worry. It doesn't get much use this season, so you'd be doing me a favor, really."
"Well, if it's a favor..." he smiled at her as he bent down and hoisted his bag over one shoulder. "Though I suppose you'll owe me one."
She could feel her mouth form a little "o" in surprise. "I hadn't thought about that." She nodded, smiling again. "Yes, I suppose I will."
"Come see me when you're done, then. Take your time. I'll probably be up for a while. And hey, I remember the way, so I'll see you then." He gave her a small wave and walked off without really giving her a chance to respond.
Go to see him, huh? She smiled as she wrote his name down in the book. Yes.
Despite his assurance that he would be up, she was glad that it wasn't much later when she approached his room, fidgeting from a sudden shyness as she called out to him.

None of that really seemed to matter, though, not with him right in front of her. "So, I'm moving back to Inaba," he said quietly, as if this bombshell wouldn't shatter the comfortable silence that had hung in the air.
Yukiko bolted upright at that. "Really?" She cast her mind about for something that wouldn't sound too stupidly obvious. "Have you decided where you're going to live?"
He smiled, as if at some private joke. It was a smile one got used to, being around Souji. "Well, you could say I have my eye on a place."
She tilted her head to the side, regarding him curiously. But he didn't seem inclined to share, so she gave a little mental shrug. "Well, best of luck with that." Was it just her, or did his smile seem to grow a little at that? "O-of course, you're welcome to stay here as long as you need." He just nodded once in agreement and thanks, and she smiled. "It will be...really wonderful, to have to back in town." She giggled as she glanced at the clock and saw how much time had passed. "You know, as favors go, sitting and talking with you is a really easy one."
"Well," Souji confessed quietly. "That wasn't actually the favor I had in mind." Coming from anyone else, that might have worried her, but somehow his presence was as calming as it ever was. He took his hands off the table and stuck them in his pockets, as if considering his next course of action.
"What is it?" Yukiko asked quietly, almost afraid to disturb him. What if it was something bad...? What if something had happened during his time in the city?
He looked back over at her, then nodded to himself, pulling his clenched hand out of his pocket, placing it lightly on the table.
She swore to Chie later that she didn't understand why he had opened his hand to reveal a small black box. She started to get it once he opened it, showing a ring neither very fancy nor expensive, but somehow perfectly suited to her tastes (how did he always know?). Even the quiet, "Marry me," took a moment to sink in.
She stared at him through that moment, taking in that face she still knew so well. This didn't seem to phase him either, and she just had to smile. He was getting worse, wasn't he? A year ago it had taken him three words - "I love you" - to turn her world upside down. Now it only took him two. "Yes," she said. "Oh, yes."

He smelled different - must be using a different shampoo. And he felt slightly different, no longer all bone and muscle from running around killing monsters with a sword. Well, neither was she, in all honesty. Still, the hug was just the same as it ever was, his arms tight across the small of her back.
The sound of the clock chiming surprised them both, and they jerked out of each other's arms. They shared an embarrassed smile at that, but Souji glanced back at the clock. "Should you go? I shouldn't keep you from your job."
"Uh-huh. But," she said as she stepped back, moving upwards for a kiss, the old words rising easily to her lips, "Just a little longer."
