“Best. Vacation. Ever.”

Yousuke flopped onto his bed with a contented sigh. It sagged a bit under his weight, but was otherwise delightfully squishy. A wooden fan sent a faint breeze through the hotel room. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Kanji poking curiously through a book he’d found in the desk drawer.

“I sure hope so,” said Chie, flopping her duffel bag on the floor. “I mean, I can’t complain about being in America or anything, but - jeez, that airport was crazy!”

Yousuke let out a groan. “Don’t remind me. I thought I was never gonna get through customs.”

“Well, that’s what you get for trying to bring along all that snack food.”

“How was I supposed to know they’d be so strict about food? Man, I could use some of that about now …”

“Hang on, sempai.” Kanji continued to thumb his way through the book. “I’m lookin’ through the phone book now.” A frown. “‘cept it’s kinda hard to read.”

Yousuke lifted his head awkwardly. “… Kanji, did you actually pay attention in English class? Besides learning the alphabet?”

“‘course I did!” said Kanji. “I know greetings and shit. Y’know. Important stuff.”

“Um, Kanji-kun?” said Yukiko, coming to hover over his shoulder. “I think you’ve got it upside-down.”

“Oh.” He tilted it in his hands. “You sure?”

“Maybe we should handle this part,” said Chie. She abandoned her duffel bag to flop on Kanji’s bed. “I watch English shows all the time. And Yukiko’s just smart at everything.”

Yukiko reddened. “Not everything. But probably enough for pizza. - oh look, here’s the index!” And with that she shuffled to the back of the book, searching in earnest.

“As long as this doesn’t end another round of Mystery Food X, I don’t care,” said Yousuke, groaning again. HIs entire back ached from that flight - twelve hours, with Kanji leaning against his shoulder for most of the trip - plus the fiasco at the airport. He didn’t even know what time it was here, but he was exhausted.

An awkward silence filled the room, broken only by the faint sound of Yukiko flipping pages. Then Kanji spoke up: “I wish Sempai were here.”

“… yeah. Or Naoto-kun. Or Rise-chan,” said Chie, draping her arms over the side of the bed. “It’s not the same, y’know?”

“Yeah.” Yousuke couldn’t help but agree. “I keep thinking I’m gonna turn around and see him in the hallway or something. And it’s just weird without the other two.”

“Naoto’s all right,” said Kanji abruptly. “I got a letter.”

Yousuke nearly fell out of bed. “You what? When?”

“Yeah, when?” said Chie. “Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Well, uh - I mean we just got the acceptances for this summer program, and - I forgot, okay?” Kanji rubbed the back of his head ruefully. “Said somethin’ about workin’ with the police here. A follow-up case for all that stuff in Inaba, y’know?”

“Huh? Here?” said Chie. “You mean Los Angeles here, or America here?”

“Dunno. Letter didn’t say.”

“You know,” said Yukiko, who was still focused on the book in her hands, “we could ask. We’re going to the police department downtown tomorrow, right?”

Yousuke blinked stupidly, trying to remember. His mind was still a daze of bad airplane movies and cramped seating. “Hang on. I think I still got the itinerary in my pocket.” He fished around in his jeans, pulling out a couple old Junes receipts - a point card, and - there! Badly rumpled, but still readable. He spread it out on the bed. The Kirijou Group’s Young Scholars Summer Detective Program: a ten day trip to the US, complete with tours of the local police departments and the American legal system. It had been Yukiko’s idea. Anything would be tame after that mystery they’d just completed, but that wasn’t the point. It was the symbol of the thing. Their last trip together before going their separate ways next year.

… well, except for Kanji. But it wouldn’t have been complete without him. It already felt empty without Souji and Naoto and Rise.

... anon apologizes for goofing up italics twice in a row. Lacking a delete button really sucks.
