School Dance = overused plot device, but I hope this suits...

-------

Apparently it'd been in planning for months. Kanji had just never been told about it. Or rather, he had been told about it, several times, if Yukiko-senpai was to be believed; he just hadn't been listening. Two weeks ago, running late into school, he'd almost tripped over Chie-senpai in the corridor, knocking them both to the floor and scattering a bunch of white cards. Kanji had scrambled to help her pick them up, fearing a kick in the face or worse - and turning over one of the cards, he'd seen three words in ornate black script. Yasogami High Ball. He handed the cards back to Chie, who'd grinned at him, a lion stalking her prey.

She'd launched into a description of the upcoming high school ball, a brand new event apparently - and informed him in no uncertain terms that yes, he was going to attend, yes, it was formal wear, and yes, he would bring a partner. She'd made some crack about it being Yosuke, and Kanji had scowled back, then asked whether her and Yukiko were going as a couple. Chie had gone bright red, shoved an invitation in his hands, and stormed off.

He was getting much better at figuring people out.

He'd left it way too late to find a dance partner, however - not because there was no-one to ask but rather because there was, very much so. He just hadn't known how to do it. He'd considered asking Souji-senpai what to do, since he'd snagged Rise and according to every other guy in the school that was a major coup. But Yosuke had been there when the event occurred - and apparently it consisted entirely of Rise jumping up into Souji's arms, throwing her arms round his neck, and informing him that he, the lucky guy, was going to take her to the ball. Yosuke'd been no help either, mainly because he'd been rejected by all seven girls he'd asked. In the end, he'd ordered Teddie to hang out with him at the dance. Purely guys together, he'd insisted to Kanji. Ever since, Teddie had been telling anyone who'd listen that he was going on a date with Yosuke and expected smoochings afterwards. Kanji prided himself on being a decent guy, or at least trying to be one - but even he was gonna rip into Yosuke about this.

With Souji and Yosuke out, there'd been no-one else to ask. Two days before the event, Kanji had still been tied in knots, trying to figure how to either just ask the damn question, or skip out of the event without anyone noticing. But in the end it hadn't mattered. Yesterday morning, in the first floor corridor, Naoto had walked up to him, handed him an invitation card and asked, very quietly, if he would accompany her to the dance.

After ten awkward seconds of disbelief, Kanji had managed to respond with something not even approaching cool assent - more a brief bout of grateful stuttering - but it'd made Naoto look pretty happy. Which was why he was now standing outside the school gym in a sharp black tux, trying to figure out whether this whole thing was going to be awesome, nerve-wracking, or a combination of the two. Mrs Tatsumi had been overjoyed at the chance to get her son out of his usual t-shirts; she'd presented him with three different outfits to select from and tailored the final choice to fit. As far as she knew, Kanji had hated the entire process. Truth was, he loved it; felt like a prince. Sure, a prince with bleached hair and piercings - but if Naoto could be a Detective Prince, and Chie could be Yukiko's prince, hell, he could be one too.

The latter two were walking across the yard right now, arm in arm, dressed in elaborate, elegant gowns; Yukiko's her usual crimson red, trimmed with lace ruffs, and Chie's a high-necked buttercup yellow. Both girls looked stunning, even more than he'd expected.

Chie stuck her tongue out at him as they walked by, and Yukiko smiled. "I think Naoto's looking for you, Kanji-kun," she said - then both girls started to giggle as they walked through the gym door.

"Kanji-kun!" He looked up. Naoto was beckoning to him from across the yard.
