“Kanji-kun! Can you hear me?!”
He stared at her, almost unfocused, but then nodded, “Ya… hear you loud ‘n clear…”
“You need to stay awake, got it? The others will be here soon,” she said quietly, sitting next to him. He glanced at her for a minute, but then drifted his attention back to the moving sky. God dammit his body was on fire…
“… Why did you do it?”
“… ‘scuse me?” he was spacing out, unsure what she asked. Naoto gave him a stern stare, “Why did you get in the way of that Shadow? I would be fine.”
“It would’ve killed you.”
“There’s no evidence that would’ve occurred.”
“Yea… on one knee with a shadow charging… really would’ve survived that…”
“You were in no better condition, Kanji-kun…” Naoto replied with a frown, “And now look. Why take such a grievous injury?”
“… Dunno. Guess I don’t wanna see ya hurt…” A blatant lie, but one she actually took.
“Don’t be ridiculous… hmm… we should have tried better to avoid it and seek the others,” she whispered, not noticing the faint flicker of disappointment over his face. Of course she would never ask questions; acting without reason happened all too much for him.
Sighing, she rose to her feet, “No shadows are around our location… I’m going to try and find them… just wait here and stay awake.”
“Wait, Naoto…” he said, and she glanced back at him over her shoulder, shaking her head, “I’ll be back soon… just keep fighting like always.”
Kanji reached for the hem of her pant leg weakly, but she slipped through his fingers, disappearing from his blurred sight within moments. The digits curled, grasping empty space and he allowed his hand to fall limply against the ground. Of course she would brush him off to get help; he could last a while and fight to stay awake… always said he could.
His chest tightened and he shut his eyes slowly, opening them again. There wasn’t going to be a soon. There wasn’t a ‘coming back’… not to him.
Oh well, he did what he wanted… he saved her so she could go on and be happy with Senpai. She would be able to smile, laugh, and be accepted for who she truly was… Love and be loved by someone who wasn’t a coward. Grow old; die with family and friends by her side… he would die here, young, utterly alone… it was better this way. He never deserved any more.
A cough was forced from his mouth, blood splattering onto the ground and his body felt numb. Kanji continued to look in the direction she had walked off in. So oblivious to his own emotions to act, but she didn’t notice him in the first place. Nobody really ever did…
Tears rolled from the corner of his eyes, but he forced a smile on his face, “S-senpai… you better take care of ‘er… you… better...”
’Do more than I ever could… but then again, you always have. That’s why she picked you over me…’
He was cold, his body entirely numb and aching for sleep, for…
Kanji let his eyes close and he moved no more.

“I saw them at the park this afternoon coming home from school. I should’ve figured… they were holding hand and she was blushing. Of course I’ve lost. I didn’t even have the guts to face her. I couldn’t even say the right shit speaking directly to her…
In the group, away from it, that’s the only time I’ve seen her so happy. She definitely likes him… it hurts to think about it, but that’s just how it is I suppose.
A tailor’s son and a detective… of course that stupid and besides that, I’m nothing. She has everything ahead of her and a better future with senpai… Naoto, I hope he treats you well… better than anything I could ever do.”
“Wait, he thought… I was dating senpai?” Naoto whispered, unable to look up.
Yosuke crossed his arms, “Seems like it… so… he did this becau-“
“… He wrote that too, hold on,” Souji said, scanning another page. He frowned, but then read:
“I see everything now. Small gestures between the two…
I’m just an idiot for being hung up over her like this! Dammit! Why was I just fooling myself? I never had a chance! It should be like this, but now every time I see her… forget it. I’m preaching to a stupid book. There was never any point in trying. I should be happy that she’s happy. She isn’t suffering from her shadow anymore and trying to deny who she is.
She can live life without a care and with someone decent by her side…
Senpai… I’ll make sure nothing happens to her when we go after that son-of-a-bitch Adachi. Doesn’t care what happens I suppose… Might get killed by one of those fucking shadows, but it probably doesn’t matter. Without me, they can be happy… everyone can be happy.”
“Happy? … t-that idiot…” Rise muttered, wiping her eyes, “He died over… what!? What did he die for!?”
“An unrequited love,” Yukiko whispered. Naoto was quiet, still not raising her head as Yukiko continued, “How long had he been like this and how come we didn’t notice?”
“How could we? He didn’t say anything, but then again, I guess that’s what happens when you have a complex,” Yosuke sighed. Souji closed the book, “Naoto and I were only hanging out to solve the Phantom Thief X. He most likely thought we were…”
“… That idiot,” Naoto whispered, shaking her head, “Why did it turn out to be like this?”
“Well you’re the detective. Why did you never notice his behavior?” Chie asked, sternly looking at Naoto.
The detective shook her head, “I thought his behavior was peculiar, but I didn’t think much of it. I believed he just… acted that way all the time. I didn’t think I caused it.”
“Didn’t think? It didn’t strike you weird at the on the school trip or the Culture Festival? He hinted at it so many times, we thought you noticed!” Chie exclaimed. Naoto’s cap just lowered on her head, causing Chie’s temper to rise, angry tears forming, “Well, say something!”
“Chie-chan, stop. Nao-chan is just as upset as everyone,” Teddie said, frowning, but Chie shook her head, “No she’s not! She’s too calm! How can she be this way after losing a close friend!? She’s just a heartless... ah!”
Everyone jumped as Chie took an annoyed swipe at Naoto, a smack ringing in the room. Her hat was knocked from her head and Chie retracted her hand after feeling something wet. Through her short blue hair, tears were visibly falling from Naoto’s eyes. Slowly, she turned back, but didn’t look up at Chie, “I… I didn’t expect any of this to happen… I just didn’t know.”
“Naoto-kun…”
…
A few years later, the Textile shop closed down. Mrs. Tatsumi couldn’t manage it any longer as she gained in years. The members of the investigation squad returned on that day in December to gaze at their friend’s old home, silent in prayer.
Naoto removed her hat and gazed elsewhere, her expression solemn. It changed as she blinked, noticing a faint presence. A tall blonde teenage boy stood a distance away, his hands pocketed as he frowned. He looked at her before heaved a sigh and turned, fading away.
