Yosuke had to admit, evenings were his favorite time of day. Not only was there no school to worry about (unless exams were near, in which case school was to be worried about) but that's when the customers at Junes started dying down.
The teen stretched and rubbed his neck, only to sigh irritably when he spotted a couple trays left on tables in the food court. Of course...Evenings also meant people liked to hurry home, and leave their messes behind as a result. Jeez...
As he went to retrieve one of the trays, he paused when he noticed the food courts lone occupant. Even at a short distance he was easily able to recognize Saki-senpai when he saw her, and hey, who was he to bypass an opportunity to talk to her? "Senpai!"
Glancing up, Saki smiled and leaned back into the chair once she saw him approach. "Oh, Hana-chan. What are you doing here?"
"I was going to ask you the same thing," Yosuke replied, stopping at her table and drumming his fingers along the back of an empty chair. "I thought your shift ended an hour ago-not that you can't be here when you're not working, but...ah..."
Fortunately Saki saved him the trouble of having to think of anything else to say. "I guess it does seem a little weird." She tilted her head and gestured to the seat he was still strumming his fingers against: a gesture which he took as an invitation to sit. "I was just trying to finish up some homework before heading back home."
"Homework? Here?" He chuckled as he slid into the seat. "Wow Senpai, I didn't think the food court at Junes would be a very good place for something like that."
"Yeah, well." She shrugged a shoulder lightly and returned her attention to her work. "It gets quiet in the evening, and it's a lot easier to concentrate here than at home."
Yosuke only nodded in response. It would probably be a good idea to leave her to finish her schoolwork. He didn't want to be a distraction. Yet even with that thought he remained seated and watched. He kept silent as he did so, and he was able to learn that she had a habit of chewing on her pen while trying to figure out an answer to a problem. It was oddly...cute in a way and it made him realize how much he wished he could know more of her habits and quirks.
Much too soon-for Yosuke anyway, since it had been at least ten minutes-Saki nodded and straightened her papers before slipping them inside the book. Turning back to him, she smiled.
"Thanks for keeping me company, Hana-chan. I'll be going home now."
He stood as she did, not thinking before he blurted out, "Do you want me to walk with you? I mean, it...It's getting dark and..."
"It's fine," again she saved him from having to think up something better to say. "It's really not that far."
"Right..." Yosuke returned to his seat with a nod. "Just...Be careful, Saki-senpai."
There was a sigh and for a moment, Yosuke thought he had said something wrong. But then Saki's arms looped around his neck and her chin rested atop his head as she embraced him from behind.
"You really are a great guy, Hana-chan." She sounded almost as though she was trying to convince herself of that fact, but any curious thoughts her statement may have caused were immediately forgotten once she kissed the top of his head. She stayed that way for a few precious seconds, and then gave his shoulders a quick squeeze before pulling away and gathering her things. "I'll see you tomorrow."
Yes, Yosuke repeated to himself as he waved goodbye to her departing form. Evenings really were his favorite time.
