First he looked at Souji. Stared. "Are you okay?"
"A few bruises," Souji admitted. "I don't think my nose is broken."
Dojima nodded. Then suddenly he flipped from Uncle to Detective and his glare could have melted steel.
"We heard the story from the nurses," Dojima was saying. At least, Yosuke thought so. It was hard to hear over the gibbering panic of his own thoughts. "Do you really expect us to believe a mob of panicked shoppers did this to you?"
"I dunno, Dojima-san," Adachi muttered. "Junes can get crazy around the holidays."
"What holiday is that, Adachi?"
The younger detective wilted under Dojima's glare. Yosuke felt a stab of sympathy for the guy as Souji's uncle turned to him.
"If I go to your father with this story, will he even know about this 'sale'?"
Yosuke winced, opened his mouth despite the panic and sudden blanking of his mind. His fault. How did everything always always become his fault? Especially where Teddie was concerned?
"When Souji came home last week with a black eye, he said you two had been sparring," Dojima hadn't moved from his place near the door, but Yosuke felt the man's voice advancing on him like a rabid dog, growling louder and louder. "You two seem to get along well, but I have to wonder-"
He'd be grounded for life... or maybe killed outright, if his dad was feeling merciful.
"It's not Yosuke-senpai's fault!" Rise cried, jerking her fists downward. He might have appreciated it- but he was a bit overwhelmed by the relief of having Dojima's glare off him and on someone else.
Rise... seemed to bear up underneath it- but then she'd probably faced down wild directors and rampaging fans a lot scarier than one country detective.
She still looked grateful when Souji came to her rescue.
"It's not Yosuke's fault, uncle," he said, fingers worrying the handkerchief. "He wasn't even there for the beginning."
