“You guys should head back home,” he finally says, but there’s no conviction in his words. A few of the girls look up, but their gaze drops a second later; no one moves. Dojima tries again; he can’t even look at them this time. “It’s… getting late. Your parents are probably worried.”
“They know we’re here, Dojima-san.”
He turns, finds the Amagi girl looking at him. Her eyes are still wet and watery, but he can see a quiet sort of resolution there; she’s not going anywhere tonight. A few nods seem to circulate around the room, and Dojima knows he’s the lost this battle. He shrugs his shoulders weakly in defeat and folds his arms across his chest.
“Does Nanako-chan know yet?” Satonaka asks, rubbing at her eyes with her sleeves. Dojima’s gaze drops to the ground again, and he silently shakes his head. He’d gotten Hanamura’s call at the office, after all, and since then, he hadn’t had a chance to call his daughter, let alone go home to tell her in person.
His hand is already reaching for his cell phone, when another voice jars him out of his thoughts; this time it’s Kujikawa. She’s shaking her head, pigtails swaying slightly with her movement. “She deserves to be told in person. This is her big bro in here after all.”
“But I can’t leave him here alone. I’m family and-”
“He’s not alone.” It’s the kid with the fair hair and blue eyes. “He never will be.” Dojima can’t put his finger on it as to why he thinks so immediately, but there’s something incredibly profound about Teddie’s words. He can only stare for a moment before a wry smile creeps onto his features.
The kid’s got good friends.
Pushing himself off the wall, he gives the group of teenagers another look and dips his head, as if in thanks. “Gimme a call the second the situation changes. I’m… I’m going home to Nanako.”
He’s not sure how both of them had ended up passing out on the couch. Nanako’s curled up against him, a fluffy blanket pulled up to her chin, and he’s got an arm wrapped around her, holding her close. She shifts slightly when his phone goes off, but he answers it quickly enough to keep her from waking.
“Dojima speaking,” he murmurs, trying to get the haze of sleep out of his head.
“Souji’s stabilized. The docs say he’ll pull through.” Hanamura’s on the other line, and from the sound of his voice, he’s just woken up, too. Dojima glances at his watch; it’s 4:06 in the morning. On any other day, he would’ve growled at any asshole who called him at this hour, but right now, he can’t help but grin.
The grin turns into laughter, and his shoulders are shaking, rousing Nanako from her sleep. She looks at him through sleepy eyes, and Dojima can’t help but pull her into a bear hug. “Dad?”
“Your big bro’s going to be okay,” he says. What she says in response, what Hanamura’s still saying on the phone, Dojima doesn’t know. All he knows is that his nephew’s alright, and that’s good enough for him right now.
