Dojima/Chisato anonymous February 6 2009, 04:06:40 UTC
She set the plate of steaming hot food in front of him and sighed as he pushed it aside, opening up his folder full of paperwork. Chisato spooned some noodles and tofu onto her own plate and brought it to the table.

“How was your day?” she asked quietly, knowing that his day was never over. Ryotaro always took his work home.

“Guy exposed himself at the train station,” her husband responded, thumbing through the papers. “Think he's been working up and down the whole train line. Have to coordinate with a dozen other departments. It's pissing me off.”

She poked at her food, the smell of it making her ill. It had been hard to keep anything down all day. “Maybe you should eat. You'll focus better on a full stomach.”

“If I don't get this done tonight, this guy could do it again. We need to catch him.” His eyes were determined, and she supposed it was that dedication to catching horrible people that had drawn her to him to begin with. It was all to protect her and everyone else in Inaba, Chisato understood that. But for just one night, Ryotaro needed to shut it off.

She pushed his plate back towards him. “Eat. Please.”

He frowned at her, shoving the papers in the folder and setting it aside. “Can't you just box it up for me for tomorrow?” His cell phone rang, and he stood to go retrieve it from his jacket where he'd flung it on the couch.

But Chisato was closer, and she reached the phone first. She watched her husband's face turn furious as she opened the phone, disconnected the call and shut it off. He couldn't even speak he was so angry with her, but she would be damned if he went running back to the station tonight.

She held the phone behind her back. “I'm sorry, but you can't leave.”

He put his hands on his hips, staring down at her. “If I don't work, the bills don't get paid.”

I have a job too, she wanted to remind him, but she kept that one quiet. “You can work tomorrow. Bright and early.”

“Give me the phone.”

“No.”

He tried to reach around behind her, and she did her best to evade him. But he was still quite a bit bigger than her, and he half-tackled, half-carried her to the couch where he wrenched it from her grasp. “I need to call in.”

“You shouldn't be so rough with me,” she warned him, although she wondered if he'd catch on to the change in her voice.

Ryotaro grunted, shifting her onto his lap while he turned the phone on. He stroked her back in apology as the phone lit up once more, announcing one voicemail waiting. “Might be important.”

She moved his hand from her back to her front, resting it on her abdomen. “I said you shouldn't be so rough with me.”

“Heard you the first time,” he said, dialing the voicemail line. She squeezed his hand insistently. For a detective, he sure had a hard time figuring things out. Her mornings in the bathroom, the note about the doctor's appointment she'd left on the refrigerator...

“Ryotaro.”

He looked up at her, phone pressed to his ear. “Would you quiet down? I need to hear...” She watched his eyes move downward to where their fingers intertwined over her stomach.

She squeezed his fingers again, confirming what he was now suspecting. He calmly shut the phone, setting it down on the floor. Chisato saw tears in his eyes for only a split second before he embraced her, laughing happily.

“Why didn't you just say so?!”

She felt tears of her own, and she decided not to fight them. He kissed her, holding her face in his hands, only stopping to laugh again. “I'm going to be a father. I'm going to be a father!”

Chisato hugged him in return. There would be bills, so many more bills. The pair of them would have to work until they collapsed, but there would be a third Dojima in the house, and the sacrifices would be worth it. The paperwork on the dining table was forgotten, and all she and her husband knew was each other.
