Akihiko nodded.
With just two people, much as it grated, they had to run away from the Shadows they encountered more often than not. The Shadows here were as strong as the ones in Tartarus, often stronger, and they couldn't afford to take the risk of facing too many. They just had to get to the top, find Shinji, and - if it was this time as it had been before - the entire thing would disappear like it had never been.
Shinji's voice echoed down the hallways before them. “Leave me alone. You guys won't get it. You're not like me.”
Akihiko ran in circles in his head, trying to figure out what the Shadow was trying to say with half his mind and trying to ignore it completely with the other. The Shadow was just trying to mess with him - he needed to put it out of mind.
The smell of something burning got stronger as they went up, a faint haze of smoke hanging in the air. By the time they reached the top, Akihiko and Mitsuru were both coughing and covering their mouths. In front of them was a door - innocuous, just a kitchen door. The chopping sound was coming from behind it.
They opened the door to yet another kitchen, one with smoke wreathing at the ceiling. Pots and pans and cupboards lined the walls, and a slab of a table was smack in the middle of the room, a gigantic cutting board on it.
“Shinji!” There he was, wearing a beanie and trenchcoat he usually only ever took out when it was freezing out. He stood behind the table, fully concentrating on cutting what looked to be a sort of pale tuber with dark insides. Chop. Chop. Chop.
Akihiko and Mitsuru ran into the kitchen - and Shinji looked up, his eyes yellow and his face split in a malicious grin. Akihiko shot a glance left to see the real Shinji leaning against the wall, pale, still in his school uniform.
“Knock before you come in!” the Shadow growled, but he didn't stop with his cutting. Now that Akihiko was closer, he could see that it was -
Not a tuber.
“I said I didn't want you in here,” the Shadow's voice was low, almost whispered. “This is my haven.” Chop.
Akihiko ignored the Shadow, rushing over to support Shinji. “Are you okay?”
Shinji shoved him off. “Get lost.”
“What? No!” Akihiko was aghast. “We have to beat this thing.”
Mitsuru nodded. “Like it or not, Aragaki, you need our help.”
Shinji leaned back against the wall. “I don't need you for this.”
