As she sits and watches the scene in front of her, graceful is not the word that comes to Naoto's mind.
It does if she focuses on Yukiko, on the gentle motion of her hand and the way her hair falls over her shoulders. Her senpai presents an effortlessly elegant picture, one that makes Naoto feel twice her size and three times as clumsy.
At least until she turns her eyes slightly and see her other senpai sprawled over the floor on her stomach, her tongue sticking out slightly as she stared down at the page. Her hair was mussed, her foot waving in the air to some rhythm only she heard, but Chie looked happy and free and totally at peace.
And as Naoto watched, the two moved together easily. Chie draped her jacket Yukiko's shoulders before she even mentioned being cold; Yukiko had anticipated Chie's sudden craving for Meat Gum, pulling the snack out of her back with a smile. (Naoto briefly tried to imagine Yukiko purchasing that before deciding she would be happier without that mental image.) These two people had the most seamless relationship Naoto had ever witnessed, and she leaned back so that she could whisper to the girl sitting next to her.
"Do you think...we'll ever have something like that?"
Rise glanced over at her, speaking in a normal tone that utterly destroyed any chance of subtlety. "Don't be silly, Naoto-kun. We're already a part of it."
The other two looked over the length of the table at them, smiling. And no matter how hard Naoto inspected, they were looking at her and Rise the same way they did each other. She tugged her cap a bit lower on her head, but she knew she was blushing because she could feel the warmth spread through her chest right down to her toes.
2.
It's hard, with so many people, to never have any arguments. But perhaps "arguments" is too strong a word, as Naoto points out and Yukiko agrees. "Disagreements" is Rise's suggestion while Chie wonders why they're worrying about word choice at all.
The thing they disagree about the most then (other than who's making dinner), is about the bed. Or rather, beds, because there's no way that all four of them can fit on one. They've turned into a traveling band, Rise laughs at one point, because they spend their nights hopping from one person's home to another. It's too suspicious to always be staying over at Naoto's place (so often chosen for the lack of parents or grandparents). And, too often for their taste, they have to split up, two and two. And that is where their disagreements start.
"You've been hogging Naoto-kun," Chie tells Yukiko one afternoon when they're all out by the river. The remark makes Naoto fidget uncomfortably and Yukiko just raise an eyebrow.
"I wasn't aware," she responds in amusement.
Chie nods vigorously. "Yeah, the past three nights. C'mon, share a little."
Naoto is about to splutter that she is not a thing, thank you very much, she can decide where and with whom she's spending the night, but Rise gets her shot in first: "Aw, Chie-senpai, I hope you aren't getting bored of me."
The tease in her voice is obvious, but Chie answers her seriously anyway. "Of course not. I just think that we should split our time equally. That only seems fair, right?" She looks around, meeting their eyes. "Right?"
The others are forced to agree, but that sparks an argument - a disagreement - about how such a thing would work. Everything from schedules to games of rock-paper-scissors is bandied about, and in the end the sun is painting the river a brilliant orange and they still haven't come up with the perfect answer.
"Jeez," Chie complains, picking herself up off the ground. "When did this get so complicated? This must have been simpler back in the-" Chie's pause makes everyone look up at her in time to see her slap a fist onto her palm. "That's it! Just like how the cavemen used to do it, right?" She let out a whoop, reaching down and grabbing Naoto before racing down the street to town.
Yukiko and Rise climbed more leisurely to their feet, listening to Chie's laughter and Naoto's cries of "Put me down right this instant!" floating back to them.
"Well, shall we follow after them?"
"Yeah, let's go," Rise responds as she twines her fingers with Yukiko's.

Rise already knew a lot about people and the assumptions that they make. If she goes out into town or into the city with just one of the group, people almost always assume that they're girlfriends. She can tell by the curious (and sometimes leering) looks they get or the quiet way people smile or nod or phrase something to show that they're in the know. She gets it. She even enjoys playing to the audience (except for those creepy guys), because it's much more fun to be in on the secret than not.
It's more interesting to see what happens when only three of them are out, like on the days when Yukiko has to work at the inn. Rise likes watching people, so she's the one who notices people struggling to categorize them. Most people assume that just two of them are dating, and the third is tagging along. Some people assume they're all friends. Very few see past what they're conditioned to see and glimpse the truth.
But for her, it's most fun when they all get to go out together. Mostly because they're all together, but also because people's assumptions completely break down. Almost nobody thinks that these four high school girls could possibly be in a relationship. Not altogether, certainly not at the same time. So even when she hugs Naoto or kisses Chie's cheek and then goes hold onto Yukiko's arm, most people just don't see them they way they truly are. It makes Rise a little sad; she remembers too well the pain of trying to categorize everything and make it fit into little boxes. But it also amuses her, because when someone comes up and asks her about her girlfriend, she has to restrain herself from replying, "Which one?"

"It'll be like the campout," Yukiko says cheerfully, only to get a groan from Chie.
"Please never mention that again," Chie asks as the two first years look curiously between them.
"....Sorry," Yukiko replies, scrambling to find something better. "But it'll be fun."
Naoto nods, starting to walk towards the hall. "I'll help you get out the extra blankets," the detective says as Yukiko follows after her.
When they return, Naoto's bedroom furniture has been shifted so that there's a big clear space on the floor. "Help me spread these out, please," Yukiko asks, and the others take the blankets and begin to spread them over the floor, layering them carefully.
Chie kisses Yukiko quickly when she takes a blanket, and Yukiko notices that she tastes unusually of cherry lip gloss. She laughs as the kiss ends, and once Chie realizes why, she smiles rather sheepishly while Rise shrugs unrepentantly.
So Yukiko walks over and interrupts Naoto's task with a kiss of her own, getting a puzzled look from the detective when she pulls away. "When did you kiss Rise?" Naoto asks, and that sets Yukiko off into a helpless fit of laughter. She tries to stop it, honestly, but she keeps seeing Naoto's questioning eyes and hearing that frank question and it sets her off all over again.
By the time the fit dies down, blankets and pillows have been spread on the floor, creating something close to a nest that is much larger than any of their beds. Large enough, actually, to fit all four of them, even if it's not quite as comfortable as a mattress.
And as it turns out, Yukiko ends up with one of the outside spots, next to Rise and able to smell her floral shampoo and cherry lip gloss. But she can also reach over Rise to touch Naoto's arm, and see Chie beyond her.
There are shifts throughout the night. Yukiko wakes up slightly at one point to feel a very familiar pair of strong arms around her. She falls back asleep quickly, only to be woken by the sounds of a nightmare. So she's the one who draws herself carefully out of Chie's hold to crawl to Naoto's side and soothe away the terror.
And in the morning, it's Rise again. Well, that's who she first sees when she opened her eyes, but honestly it's everyone. Rise in front of her, Chie's legs thrown across hers and Naoto pressed against her back. Yukiko sighs and closes her eyes. She can't think of a better way to wake up.

This is simply amazing and very amusing. And very very interesting! OP never thought anyone would take this prompt!
So how did writer!anon find writing a pairing of four, OP is curious. =P

Actually, my initial idea was just something that just turned into part 2, because more and more little moments kept popping into my head. Most of the difficulty was in trying to show all the different inner relationships (which didn't happen) and trying to keep a balance between them. That's a weakness in my writing, so it was a good challenge. But a lot of fun!

Could have been longer, because you gave great hints of their relationship dynamics, but I still thought it was awesome and very, very cute :-) Good job!
