Good Eats in EW/Hightstownkateycp2kAugust 7 2008, 00:47:07 UTC
Thanks for the compliments on the knitting!!!
Well, if you are near Main Street you can probably walk downtown. For pizza, my dad swears by Mannino's. There is also a Chinese restaurant on Main and the Slowdown Cafe (the latter is near the post office) for coffee.
If you're looking for more of a table service place, Theo's Lakeside Grill is on Main Street. However, the ownership has just changed, and a sign that I saw outside the place this morning proclaims a renovations and a new menu.
For bagels, Hightstown Hot Bagels on Franklin Street (the strip mall next to the firehouse) is good. Don't be intimidated by any long line you see, it tends to move fast. There are other restaurants in that little shopping mall but we really do not frequent them.
If you want to get in the car for good eats, you have no shortage of options:
For diner food, the Americana (on Route 130) and the Prestige (on 33) fit the bill. Americana is more kitschy but portions are plentiful. I prefer the Prestige since I can walk there, and it reminds me of my beloved Reo Diner in Woodbridge.
Another good Italian restaurant in East Windsor is Scottos, on Route 33 in the Twin Rivers Shopping Center. They have eat-in, take-out and delivery (if you eat in, it's BYO).
There is also a Chinese restaurant in the Twin Rivers Shopping Center as well.
Further down on Route 33 is Jack Baker's Seafood Shanty, Luchento's (Italian and BYO) and The Cabin. I believe you are working in Freehold; your co-workers might be familiar with that place.
For fresh produce and baked goods, you can visit Freehold's Wemrock Orchards and Battleview Orchards. Wemrock has a Tomasello Winery satellite store; Tomasello is a South Jersey vineyard with some great wines.
