Title: Be Human
Fandom: Final Fantasy VI
Who: Celes Chere
Rating: PG; Blood
Summary: She was the general of the Empire, trained to kill and feel nothing for doing so. Injected with magic she could crush a man without giving it a second thought.
Author's Notes: Pre-game

If I could just be more human
I would see every little thing with a gleam in my eye
If only I was more human
I'd embrace every single feeling that came in my life

Would I care and be forgiving?
Would I be sentimental and would I feel loneliness?
--Be Human by Scott Matthew--

The town was on fire, burning with the people still locked inside of their houses. The flames licked at the air, burned with their horrible roar of glee and lit the sky and those surrounded the town with its horrible color of death and destruction.

Her cold blue eyes glowed red with the reflection of flames glowing in them, and her gaze uncaring and unforgiving to the people. They deserved it. They deserved to die such a horrible and unforgiving death by the general. They went against the Empire and the Empire does not forgive traitors…

Staring ahead she turned to her soldiers and glared at them. They were standing there with such an expression that she wondered if they regretted what they had been ordered to do. No. They couldn’t feel regret; they weren’t allowed to feel regret for killing the lives of hundreds of innocent people. If they felt regret and one tried something she had her orders to kill them, whichever one went against the Empire and her.

“Stop looking like that,” she ordered with a cold undertone to her voice and turned back to feel the heat of the flames, all created by magic, lapped at her skin. It turned her to look like a burning woman; cold and uncaring she could not be melted by the flames of her own doing. The blood staining the heels of her boots could not sway her mind from what she had been taught for so long of being a dog of the Empire.

She was a general. She was not supposed to feel anything for these people. So she didn’t. She had learned from early on to keep her emotions down low and locked away.

But if she had taught herself that then why was there a tear running down her cheek?

“General…?”

She reached up and wiped it away with the back of her hand and turned to stare at the soldier who had addressed her. “What is it?” It had better be a damn good reason for interrupting her thoughts.

“…we got word from the Emperor, ma’am. He would like us to return as soon as possible.” The short and stout man gave her a mini-salute and Celes shook her head in a dismissive way and turned to give the burning down one last glance. Moving past the men she gripped at the sheath of her Runic Blade tightly, almost tight enough to turn her knuckles white.

“We’re going back.”

A quiet chorus of ‘yes ma’am’ run out behind her and she sighed.

She was starting to turn soft if she cried for the death of traitors…but maybe that prove that she was still human.
