The sound of laughter filled the air as snow fell from the cloudy gray sky; the white puffs descended down to the ground and to the people walking along, brushing onto their shoulders to slowly pile up or on the hair of those forgetful enough to wear a hat that cold winter’s evening.
But the cold chill of the air and the mass of snow wasn’t enough to keep the children from the streets, building snowmen and having snowball fights.
Yet Tifa Lockheart hadn’t found the closure of going outside in such cold weather to be fun. Not until she was dragged outside-decked out in full winter coat, gloves, hat, boots, and scarf-into the winter wonderland that was the outdoors. And it was much to her dismay did she sneeze and shiver at the first touch of snow to her nose.
Now, it wasn’t that she hated winter. It was quite on the contrary, really. She loved the season but going outdoors when it was so chilly just seemed to be...not the smartest of ideas really and she liked to choose staying indoors, near the toasty fire, over the cool chill of winter’s breeze outside.
Though there she was, outside and looking around as the absence of her boyfriend settled in. “…Sabin?” She said to the white falling before her burgundy eyes. When had he suddenly run off? He’d been standing there one minute, tugging her along with a grin of pure glee and then he was gone, leaving her standing there alone and confused.
If leaving her out in the cold was his idea of a joke Tifa didn’t like it. Not one in the least. But if he was going to keep her there she was going to head back to their room at the inn. And without him around to stop her she could go right through with it.
So she started to turn. But that turn made a quickly flying object to meet with her face and the cold, stinging snow slid down her skin.
“…oh, sh-TIFA!”
It was a matter of seconds that a tall blond was at her side, a look of worry and regret in his blue eyes as he bent to be level with the shocked woman. He hadn’t meant for that to hit her in the face. The snowball was meant to hit her in the back. “Ah, Tifa, I’m sorry…”
And as she turned towards him he flinched, half expecting to find her fist connecting to his chest or arm, but nothing. She didn’t do anything but stare up at him with wide eyes and a look of shock still on her face.
He didn’t like that…
“…Tifa?” Sabin reached to wipe some of the snow from her face, blinking at her in confusion. “You okay?”
But her response to his question wasn’t words; no, instead, the woman reached up, set her hands to his chest, and pushed. The reaction had taken him by surprise so instead of just stumbling back and inch or two he fell back and onto his back onto the snowy white ground. The follow up came as a surprise as well.
Feeling her shadow cast his face Sabin blinked up at her, seeing the there was a rather large bundle of snow in her arms and moved to roll to his side (even if it meant tripping her) but it was a vain attempt as she chose to, instead, drop to her knees and drop the snow flat on his face.
…revenge could be so sweet.
“Wasn’t fair…”
From his sitting position on his stomach she watched, grinning, as he wiped the snow with his gloved hands off his face and frowned at her. But it turned into a small grin at her light laugh.
“Haven’t you ever heard the saying?” She asked, leaning forward and drooping her arms over his chest.
“What saying?” He blinked at her, watching her face grow closer as she waited to answer the question, her long hair slipping over her shoulder in a fluid motion and scattering across the snow and his chest.
“You don’t know…?” The words were murmured softly to the chilled wind, her eyes closing as she smiled just a bit. Another small pause of silence and her mouth moved to his. A short, gentle kiss.
He slipped his hands to her face, apparent that all she could feel were the leather of the gloves, but it didn’t stop her from laughing softly as he pulled her closer for another kiss. Soft and sweet.
“No, I don’t know.”
With a small laugh against his mouth she kissed him again. “All’s fair in love and war.” A pause. “Especially if I win.”
