He wanted to deny her words, but his voice wouldn’t work and allow him to reply. Ichigo wanted to tell her that he hadn’t done any of those things on purpose. If he hadn’t brought Aizen down, surely someone else would have. She should already realize that and understand that what he did wasn’t all that special.
“You are my hero, and I’ve not had the chance to thank you properly.”
He couldn’t stand to let her thank him. It was because of him that she was caught up in this mess in the first place. Squeezing his eyes shut, his stomach churned sickeningly as his thoughts strayed to that dark place in his mind, the place where despair still tried to take root. She could have died. Ichigo couldn’t even imagine what this world would be like without her smiling presence. It didn’t even bear thinking.
His breath caught in his throat as something soft and warm pressed against his tightly held mouth. Ichigo’s eyes popped open in surprise to find the redheaded healer a lot closer than she was a moment ago. A lot, lot closer! She was kissing him. Orihime Inoue was really, honestly, truly, and exceedingly well, kissing him.
Holy Shit!
“I hope that was an acceptable thank you.” Orihime whispered as she stepped back. Rosy color stained her cheeks as she twisted her fingers together. “Tatsuki told me to just do what felt right. And after everything that’s happened between us, I didn’t think a handshake could convey how I feel.”
He couldn’t do anything but stare at her delightfully flushed face in silence. His heart pounded and his blood rushed in a way reminiscent of the anticipation of battle, but he wasn’t facing an enemy this time, only his thoughts and feelings. Damn. Ichigo would rather pick a fight with Kenpachi than face his emotions. Fighting was pretty straightforward, too bad the same couldn’t be said of his feelings for the beautiful healer.
“I’m sorry. I’m keeping you, aren’t I?”
Blinking back to the here and now, Ichigo watched his redheaded friend shift from foot to foot. “Huh?”
“You were on your way home, right?”
“Umm, yeah, I was.” Ichigo replied slowly as his pitiful male brain finally kicked into gear. The corner of his mouth kicked up in a crooked smile and he closed the distance between them. “But first, I wondered if you might want to thank me, again.”

In that vein, mind if I ask you for a title for this piece? I'll be pimping separate fills over at ichi_hime and at the FLOL bad_shield pimping thread, and it'll really be convenient to have titles to separate the First Kiss fills. You don't have to do it, but if you can I'd really appreciate it.
