His plan was flawless. Planned with the utmost of care, there was no way that it could be foiled. Success was imminent. If a foolproof plan was possible, this was it.
Well, not really, but this plan was all Ichigo had if he wanted to discover the culprit behind his recently accelerated hair growth. For the past two weeks, ever since the war had ended, Ichigo had attempted to get his unruly hair cut to its previous length. However, the morning after he got it cut, it would grow back mysteriously overnight.
Many theories had been suggested as to why, ranging from his out of control reiatsu being the culprit to an unforeseen side effect of the final Getsuga Tenshou. None of the theories offered a satisfying explanation.
Ichigo had finally decided yesterday that the only way he was going to get to the bottom of this was to stay up and see what happened. After getting his hair cut for the sixth time, he returned home and waited for night to come.
When bed time came around, he got ready as per usual and crawled into bed after killing the light. He tossed and turned in bed, trying to get comfortable. He had a feeling he had a long night ahead of him, but he was adamant to stay up and settle this mystery once and for all.
It was quiet for several hours. Though Ichigo was growing drowsy, he refused to fall asleep. His eyes drooped several times, but whenever they did, he would smack the side of his face to keep himself awake. He just hoped he wouldn't bruise himself come morning.
Around 3 AM, Ichigo could hear someone pushing open his window. He quickly shut his eyes to feign sleep. He listened carefully as the person shut the window behind them and began walking towards his bed.
A hand was placed on top of his head. Ichigo quickly rolled over onto his side, grabbing the person's hand and bringing them down with him as he rolled off the bed. As they fell, Ichigo made sure to pin the culprit beneath him to make sure they didn't escape.
When the two crashed to the floor, he heard a familiar voice cry out in pain. His heart skipped a beat as he said, "Inoue?"
"O - Ow... Kurosaki-kun, I can't breathe."
He quickly got off of her and heard her inhale sharply. Reaching a hand up to turn on his desk lamp, Ichigo's eyes narrowed in the sudden brightness. He glanced down at his friend on the floor, and frowned quizzically at her. "What are you doing in my room?"
"Well, u - um, you see, I, uh..." Orihime laughed nervously. "I thought I heard something in your room and uh, came to make sure you were awake."
"Your house is across town," Ichigo pointed out.
"I was outside!"
"At three in the morning?" Ichigo was growing more and more bewildered by the second. "Inoue, what's going on?"
The healer glanced down at her chest, wringing her hands gently. "I - I came to reject it." She glanced up at Ichigo guiltily.
"Reject... what?"
She pointed to his head, biting her lower lip nervously.
Ichigo ran a hand through his hair, his eyes widening as he realized what she was referring to. "My hair? You were rejecting my... hair?"
Ichigo had tried not to go into this night expecting anything. But the last person he expected to be responsible for his rampant hair growth was Orihime. He reached out his free hand towards her and helped her get back on her feet. "So you're the reason why it always grows back?"
She nodded, clutching her hands behind her back. Her shoulders were hunched as she looked away, unable to meet his questioning gaze. "Yes. I... I'm sorry."
"Why?" he asked. "Why did you keep rejecting it?"
"Because..." Her face flushed as she smiled slightly. "I like your hair long. I didn't want you to cut it. So, the first night you did I... I came by here and rejected it. I have no idea what possessed me to do it, but I was hoping that it would stop you from doing it a second time."
"And you just kept coming back when I did?"
"Y - Yeah. I'm so sorry. I know I had no right, but..." Her blush deepened. "Everyone else likes it long too."
Ichigo sighed heavily, realizing that she was right. Although their friends had tried to help him figure out why his hair kept growing back, almost all of them had remarked that they liked his new look. Even Ishida had said that it suited him better, though he had been quick to also add that it still made him look like a punk. “Why didn’t you just ask me?”
“Oh.” Orihime shrugged her shoulders. “Well, you seemed so adamant about getting it cut, I thought it would be pointless.”
“Not necessarily.” He understood her logic, but he still wished she had asked instead of going through all of this trouble to keep his hair long. “I would have considered it at least.” He scratched the side of his head sheepishly and chuckled. “I guess since you want it so much, I can keep it long.”
“Really?” Orihime’s smile would have lit up the room if it was able to.
Even if Ichigo really did want to keep it short, he couldn’t have said no to her, not with her joyful expression and bright smile. “Sure.”
Trying to contain her excitement and failing at it completely, Orihime balled up her hands and pumped them into the air. “That’s great! This is the last time I’ll have to reject it!”
“Eh?”
Orihime giggled as she called Ayame and Shun-o. “Well, it’ll take too long for it to grow back out naturally, and since I came all this way, why not?”
Ichigo tried to think of an argument, but as the Soten Kisshun formed over his head and began to reject his hair cut, he sighed in defeat. “I - I guess you’re right,” he said as his hair began to grow long again.
This was so cute! I loved Ichigo's plan to stay up late and catch the culprit! I think you did a great job, and I totally don't blame Orihime for wanting to reject his hair cut. ;)
I just knew Orihime would find a way to get him to keep the smexy longer hair!!!! Thanks for helping her out and letting us watch her get caught. Squeee!!!!
