soo... i, being a 20-year old girl not particularly familiar had to make a foray into Autozone today... it was apparently enemy territory

I've been to AutoZone once, and won't be back. I usually go to Kragen but the other day I was backing up and could see in a reflection that one of my brake lights was out. I was right by an AutoZone so I went in, with the bulb, walked to the light bulb section, didn't see an equivalent so I went up to the counter. I waited for about 5 minutes until an employee decided to come out of hiding from the back (there was one other person in the store) I walked up to him, handed him the bulb and asked if he could match it (I knew they wouldn't have the same exact bulb as it was the original and I own a VW Passat, they won't have German light bulbs there) The guy looks at it for an uncomfortably long time, rolling it over in his hand, just sort of staring at it. It was too far from his face to be reading the tiny print, it was just weird. After a bit he slowly meanders over to the light bulb section, takes about 5-6 minutes looking at them all then goes "hmmmm" and slowly walks back to the counter, goes in back, comes out with another employee. They both go back to the light bulb section and stare at the selection for another couple of minutes. I ask if it would be easier if I would just come back another time (like never) and the second guy turns and says "I've never seen a bulb like this, I don't think we carry it." I say thank you, take my bulb and leave.
I drive over to my Kragen, walk in, walk to the bulb section, see the one for my car, grab it, pay and went to the parking lot and installed it all in about 5 minutes.
I used to work at NAPA and all you had to do was type the the bulb's code in to see if we had it in stock, and if we didn't, we could just cross it over to the brands we carried.
Yea, that's why I brought the bulb to the counter, I didn't expect them to carry the exact bubl, but a aftermarket, which I assumed they would need to look up on their database. Instead I got what I described. It's a big chain, I don't think they'll be going out of business any time soon, but I for one will be staying with my beloved Kragen.
It probably would've been easier if you just gave him the make, model and year of your car and asked him for a replacement bulb. Then he could've looked it up in the computer and found the product code on the shelf. I only go there for windshield wipers and air filters so I don't know if it would work the same with bulbs, but I would imagine it would.
Although, he was pretty dense for not asking you for the make, model, year info in the first place. Would've made his job a heck of a lot easier and he probably wouldn't have lost a sale.

Good times.
