soo... i, being a 20-year old girl not particularly familiar had to make a foray into Autozone today... it was apparently enemy territory

You may want to NOT do a locking cap. If they really want to get in, they use an ice pick and poke a hole in the tank-then you get to buy a new gas tank. (have to agree, though-guy was a jerk)
It's simple: The problem with the other guy is that you're female and he's male. He suffers from Car-Store-No-Girls-Allowed-itis. Usually characterized by completely ignoring any female that walks into the store (unless she's really cute -- and his type) until forced to pay attention to her by his boss. When forced to pay attention, he gives the minimum attention necessary and as much wrong information as possible. "After all, girls don't know anything about cars."
I've run into this time and time again. When I tell these guys I have a small block v-8 with an overdrive (the 3.02 litre engine) and that no, it does not have a V belt, thank you very much; their jaws drop. Of course, I'm 48 years old and only cute to certain people.
LOL sounds like you do to your local auto parts store workers the same thing I do - rattle off the car's pertinent features and the specifics of what you need in a no-nonsense tone that lets them know that hey, you know what you're talking about. It usually drops a few jaws every time ;)
It's great to know I'm not the only 40+ female that occasionally shocks the young guys working behind the parts counter :)
I don't know that much about cars, but when I go into the auto parts store I know exactly what I'm looking for, and all the important info for looking it up. For good measure, I try to take my boyfriend or dad (both car guys) with me when I go. When I can't though, I walk in and rattle off the stuff I need. Then I act like I do when I go to Best Buy... Keep saying no to the stuff I don't need.
When I worked at NAPA I was the only female there, and I'd constantly have male customers ask for someone else or someone who "knew anything about so and so" because since I'm a girl I apparently didn't know anything about cars.

Too bad I had to prove them all wrong.
