I'm not wrong, so don't imply I am.

So, I had these two things happen within about a week of each other and I was pretty unimpressed with the implication I was in the wrong for both of them ( Read more... )

Maybe customs are different where you are, but I'd be pretty shocked if a server tried to place a napkin on my lap.

I think at really really nice restaurants, it's normal/expected for the server to do that (my first time at a really really nice restaurant, I almost got really defensive with the server along the lines of "hey, buddy, want to buy me a drink before you start reaching into my lap?", but everyone else at the table was acting like it was okay, so I bit my tongue.)

LOL!

Excuse me waiter...my gazpacho soup is cold. Please take it back to the kitchen and have them heat it properly!

My sister is currently going through a "too slow chicken mirango!" phase. The only correct follow up is "too slow for this cat."

Hey, this is mine. That's mine. All this is mine. I'm claiming all this as mine. Except that bit. I don't want that bit. But all the rest of this is mine. Hey, this has been a really good day. I've eaten five times, I've slept six times, and I've made a lot of things mine. Tomorrow, I'm gonna see if I can't have sex with something.

I agree. I would not be okay with that.

Same here. I've never even head of that and would be very uncomfortable with it.

I think is has more to do with the cost of the restaurant than where someone is from or what the custom is. At least in the US I am pretty sure you can find high end restaurants in every state where the waiter will put the napkin in your lap for you.

The first time I went to a place like that I was a little surprised but I noticed that every patron had the same thing done if they had not already placed their napkin in their laps before the waiter/waitress came to the table.

Me too. I'd be really uncomfortable with someone entering my personal space like that.

I'm a heathen who hates napkins on my lap, so it's really awkward when they do that to me. "LOL THANKS... *picks napkin up and places it back by the plate after they leave*" I don't drop food in my lap often and when I do, I'll deal with it. It's just uncomfortable and I was raised without the custom, so it just feels weird to have it sitting there.

For more upscale restaurants this is standard. I'd never been to a restaurant that did it till after I started working and we went to a silver service restaurant for our Christmas party. It still kinda weirds me out, but I've come to accept it when dining somewhere super nice. As I said in the post, I wasn't as bothered by it not being done for our group but my gran was and it was pretty much her only complaint for the night(which is amazing in itself coz she's renowned for bitching about service/food). We did see her doing it for smaller tables though...
