Help needed for potential bad service!
Here's what's going on. My boyfriend was in a fraternity for all of a month back in 2006. He was one of the founding members and paid founding dues before he quit (personal stuff, not relevant to the suck). Now, apparently, the fraternity is going into debt. That sucks for them, right?
Wrong.
They are sending emails to FORMER members (my boyfriend included) and telling them that they have to pay dues or they will be sent to collections.
Here are the emails my boyfriend has gotten so far:
Attention former Zebes,
This is *name removed*, the new treasurer for Zeta Beta Tau fraternity, Gamma Mu chapter at the University of Memphis. If you are receiving this email, you still owe money to the chapter. This money must be paid by April 25th, 2010, or your account will be turned over to a collection agency. We are now working with Omega Financial Inc. to manage the collection of debts owed to the chapter by brothers and former brothers. All of you have an account with Omega Financial. The way to pay this account is by first going to Omegafi.com and creating a username and password. You will need your account number in order to log in. I can email those to you all, since your bills have not been sent yet through the mail. You can pay online through credit card, or you may send a check/money order. To pay online, log into your account and click on ?Pay Now,? and follow the instructions. To pay through check/Money order, click on ?Pay Now,? and then under payment menu, select ?other opt

I am asking why I am being told to pay dues to Zeta Beat Tau when I have not been part of the organization for the last 3 and a half years. This is the first time since I've left that I have been told I still need to pay dues and I am very confused.

The reason you are asked to pay these dues is that we are getting serious about collecting money that is still owed to us. We have you down for owing 200 dollars to the chapter. It may be strange and frustrating to be getting a blast from the past like this. However we're only trying to do what we should have been doing all along. We are in debt to many organizations, including over $9,000 to our national office. The main reason we are so behind is that we have not effectively collected dues owed to us from members and former members. Your debt is part of over $15,000 owed to the chapter by current and former brothers. Given these facts, it's easy to see why debt collection has become such a concern for us. Your sum is not a huge sum, and it isn't due untill April 25th 2010. You can pay a little at a time through your Omega Fi account.

Are we wrong in thinking this is not something they can do? He paid dues when he joined, but quit very soon after. He is emailing the head of Greek affairs right now, so we'll see if anything comes of that. They can't make him pay, can they? We honestly just want some advice, because we have no idea what to do. Any advice would be helpful.
