"you're too young to need them."

A post someone made here a few days ago reminded me of one of my very few bad service stories.

Note: this happened a bit over a year ago, I think. At the very least, it happened before pharmacists could refuse to fill prescriptions. Also, this gentleman was NOT a pharmacist.

Edited to add: This guy was probably about my age. He wasn't -that- ( Read more... )

stupid ageism

I would have spoken to the manager and shown your ID to get this sorted out. The man was an idiot and only management (not the customer) can fix that.

I should have. Normally I'm pretty good at confrontation, and handling stuff like this myself.

Not so much on showing my ID though. I -don't- look under age, and even if I did, there's no age limit on condoms, as far as I know.

Regardless, I should have said something. I opted for not shopping there, at least.

Screw showing ID. There's not an age limit on condom purchases - it's none of his business how old you are. I'd have raised holy hell about it, myself.

Depends where you live. In some US states it's 18.

To buy condoms? What? That can't be legal.

29 states have laws regarding the sale and distribution of condoms.

Seriously? I've lived in the South and never seen a grocery store where condoms had to be inquired for like it was 1950.

I'm 45, and grew up in a town where the "Lord's prayer" was posted in the lunchroom at my elementary school, still advertises spring break as "Easter break" and has blue laws...but there wasn't an age limit on condom purchases (and my high school boyfriend was no doubt quite happy about that.)

Hmm. I shall have to research this a bit.

Sometimes the restriction is only for prison and high school distribution, but as often it's where they can be sold.

Well, that's dumb, I bought ones in a kiosk where I live, like candy, but a bit more expensive :P

The US and state governments do a lot of illegal/unconstitutional things. They just don't get called on it because the supreme court rarely bothers.

Cases like these rarely make it to the Supreme Court - it takes too much money.

Hey, if its illegal to sell vibrators in some states, why not condoms??

It's completely legal, and completely fucked up.

I didn't know that! Interesting.

I'm pretty darn sure it's not here. (California)
