I HATE THEEEEEM!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY'RE HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't wait for them to start recalling dry foods. I just switch to something that didn't have wheat gluten and thankfully also doesn't have rice protein. I don't trust them at all.
I just ordered some dog food from A+ Flint River Ranch Sunday; the food arrived Tuesday and the snacks today (shipping from CO to OR). They use "human grade" food for their cat and dog food. The food we had was "fine" - corn gluten hasn't made the recall list in the US even though it's killing pets in South Africa. I decided it was better to just avoid all gluten products, and get the whole/natural foods instead.
Human grade is just a marketing tool. They don't have "special" cows and chickens that they use for cat and dog food, they use the parts people don't eat after harvesting the meat (such as liver, kidney, ect). Most importantly, look for food that has performed AAFCO feeding trials to determine whether it is a healthy food. Anyone can design a fancy website and "formulate" a food to match the requirements without having a nutritionist on staff. Call and ask what qualifications they have (are they a vet or did they take a weekend course) and whether they're just a consultant.
Remember, chicken is 70% water just like you and me. It may weigh more than the corn they put it, but in dry weight the fillers are going to outweigh the meat by a lot.
I'm not trying to slander any pet food brand, but Joe Schmoe next door can decide one day to start making dog food in his basement and set up a flashy website.
I am so sorry you were affected in this. We were lucky that our foods weren't recalled (at least not yet, though they don't contain wheat gluten so we should be safe).
Well, if I worked for Menu Foods, I'd be cranky, too, but it would be compensating for the guilt I felt for killing people's pets.
And if you had said, "Well, after he was feeling better he still wasn't eating so I had to hand feed him" she probably would have come back with a crack about that, too. Nice how they try to throw it back on the owners.
Idjits. My cat is on prescription cat food, but after he eats it, I throw away the packaging. Who keeps their trash around for 3 months? (OK, some folks but that's just creepy, you know?)
Call back and complain to a supervisor. Sounds like absolutely uncalled for bitchery to me.
Hmm, I wonder if there will be civil and criminal trials as a result of this. I hope so. That thought makes me smile. Maybe even bankruptcies from here to China. A girl can dream....
(I didn't lose any pets, but hearing that this was something they knew about makes me especially furious.)
I read on consumerist.com that the CFO sold half his shares of stock in the company 3 weeks before the recall. Want to know how long the company knew about the tainted food before they recalled it?
I wish the best for you and your kitty, May he/she be well soon and sleeping on your face in the middle of the night (or whatever cute but annoying habits your particular cat has)in no time
