So I'm cruising for affiliates and this one game looks great. Active, long-lived, nice. Except I notice one thing.

There is a race called gypsies.

...if you wanted to make a different species from humans, why not make a different species? Elves, fae, what the hell ever, but to take an oppressed ethnic group and deem them as something OTHER than human when that very idea has been used repeatedly as justification for doing horrible things to them? What the FUCK.

And regarding the word gypsy, I think it's offensive to Roma and Sinti (spelling?) people, but not to other groups classed as gypsies (and who in fact tend to themselves resent people saying "Rom" when they mean "groups in general who are classed as gypsies)? I'm not sure though, so someone please correct me if that's not the case, because I really don't want to have something like this incorrect. Either way though, this is GROSS.

The only thing I know is that Roma people are a prominent minority in my country, and some of them takes resents the hungarian equivalent to "gipsy" and some of them resent "roma". So, I, for one, have no idea.

But still, this is gross.

And I just remembered something from back when I lived in Russia a . . . holy shit, nine years ago. lol

Before I went out there to do my summer study abroad, they gave us a Red Book which outlined Russian customs, what to do/what not to do while you're in Russia, and the #1 thing on the list (I shit you not) was, "Do not pay any attention to gypsies and do not give them money." I was like, " . . . buh . . . ?" I didn't really know what to make of it then and laughed it off (back then, I really didn't know the term was racist--now I do), but now that I've matured and know better . . . ugh.

From my experience, you're correct on this (I've met some people who actually use the term gypsy to describe their lifestyle, while I had a good Roma friend who took extreme offense to it - I was a dumb 16 year old and he set me straight) belief - some groups take offense, whereas some even use the term to describe themselves.

This is my thought. In terms of stats and stuff, it seems like a fairly standard fantasy race. Could they not have just avoided the 'HOLY SHIT WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??' name?
