I am fascinated by how much control admin exert over a site; in a word, how much bull they can get away with doing to their members. How they can treat newcomers or people who only want equal or fair treatment like crap, and ban people for bringing up points that everyone else agrees with, but are too afraid to address.
The Pern world used to be about equality, fairness and fun for all. If you were an active, friendly, contributing member who put forth a good effort to benefit the site by trying your best to post, you were a valued member of the site. Impressions used to be based on 1) activity level 2) character match up and 3) the attitude of the player, though the last was only if this person was purposely causing non-warranted drama on site and being nasty with the other members. If not everyone got along, that was all right. You were civil. You kept it out of cbox. You did not bring your real life problems into your role play. Simple as that. I mourn how things have changed.
I have always liked to think I'm an honest person, one who speaks her mind, no matter if you are admin, mod, or member. I will treat everyone equally. If I see something wrong being done on a site, or if there are members who are too afraid of their admin--which disgusts me but most are afraid of the power the admin has to ban them, give them all lower ranking dragons, or make their lives on site miserable--to go to them with issues. I also don't reveal these people's names, because if they are too afraid to speak up, then they would disapprove. So I have always never minded being that voice they don't have. Well, in the past year, it has backfired horribly.
It's sad when nearly everyone on a site can agree that the administration is handling things terribly. That they are giving the rare and ranking dragons to friends or well liked members, and the new persons and even the very active and friendly persons they don't favor are given the lowest ranking dragons. It's painfully obvious what they do. What would you do, if you were an honest person who didn't agree with it, and had everyone inviting you into group chats on IM angry with it, but too afraid to speak up? If you're me, you won't sit there and bash that admin to the hills. You will go to them, address the issue, and try to have the problem rectified. I know a member who has been on a site for over a year now. She has not a single character out of four has anything above a green/blue status? All their firelizards? Same. The same applies for other people who have been there the same amount of time, while others who arrive later and are liked get rare/ranking.
I personally don't care much about rank. But on Pern, everyone knows that rank does define the level of trust and respect the admin or queen owner has for you. I was given one color out of about fifteen that I asked not to get out of five characters standing. I had three candidates mauled, no one else's out of a huge hatching were, just three of my five. Then, when I approach the admin, what do they do but tell me to bring up my issues on the discussion board. I ask the other members if they think I should. They all enthusiastically agree, agree to also post something or back me up...then not a one does when I do.
The dragon the admin Impressed me and told my friend she did so on purpose, as well as mauling only my characters on purpose? I was told I could refuse. Then, my friend tells me if I had done so, I would be banned. I am not a low enough person to send a dragon between no matter how low this admin has sunk. I ended up keeping it. Needless to say, I feel I had a right to speak up on the behalf of myself and the countless other members treated unfairly. This admin is only sixteen and makes poor choices, and bans someone for bringing the truth of her actions to light, and mistreating them. This person is, in my opinion, a horrible admin for being unjust and unfair.
Then I find out this admin joins my new site under a false alias to cause trouble, along with the second person I will address in the next part. Yet more immaturity on her part. She gives my name and IP to other Pern sites in order to have the fandom view me as a troublesome member, who seeks 'rankers' because of her inappropriate actions and dislike of having the truth of them revealed.
Resulting in: you are disrespectful. You are banned.
Take another site. I'm on this site for a year. I am made mod, based on activity and choice of the admin. Then, a person who was there before and was banned for killing her own dragon just because she did not like the color for her character, is allowed to rejoin. Apparently she caused a lot of drama, and was banned for it. She comes back and immediately takes a disliking to me. She did not like that I was mod. She did not like how close I'd become with both admin. She didn't like that I had a lot of ranking dragons that I had either earned in contests or been given by the admin. I had far more lower ranking dragons, and twenty two characters. Of those, only four had anything above the level of a brown. I had two females in a leading position. Plans were made due to her instigation to have an entire few months worth of planning dropped since I had two clutching females. I didn't know of it. I come back the next day to find out these months of planning were completely irrelevant, and no one even included me in the discussion. I get reasonably upset about that. Not because I care if I can't have the other female clutch. Because this person had stepped in, and made plans with the admin, without my knowledge. I get back and everything is changed. Then she is trying to weasel her character into the position of Weyrleader. She came in with more rankers than I had, adopting them all from the list. Then accuses me of throwing a tantrum when I bring this to admin attention. The admin including myself had all the leaders and clutchers. The third admin decides to make the lead clutcher, the last one, for herself. I say let it be left to the members, to be fair. At this point I have one clutcher, the other admin has the leader, and the other leader. It leaves only one slot open. I get berated for saying this, and the admin get angry with me. For trying to be fair. Then they let this formerly banned, rank grubbing person take the spot as the lead clutcher for the other 'side'. I say it's a bad choice. All our other members are unhappy and complain to me. But they won't say anything. I'm moderator. It's my duty to help out. I bring it up, and I am told I'm controlling, trying to take control of the site...
This formerly banned member spreads as much garbage as she can all over this forum about me. She and the aforementioned admin /both/ joined my new site. It shows their level of maturity. She gives out my IP, she gives out my user names, she bashes me. And for what? They can have their members suck up to them out of fear. They can bash my name, because no matter who you are, I'm going to be the voice of the underdogs, and I won't be trampled, disrespected, or treated unfairly. I won't let anyone be. I'm not the admin, but I am going to be that voice, even if I get banned from every Pern site there is.
I quit two more sites. One I could not handle the new admin, she berated me without reason, in part because I had a non-canon site, in part because we did not like one another. The other the admin jerked my friend around left, right and center, and walked all over her. My friend complained to me, I took it to the admin. I got the bad rep.
So anyone here...tell me. Who is in the wrong? The member who wants fairness and speaks up for what is right, or the admin who use their position for inequality and wrong? I don't want rank. I want respect. Because that's what I give others who are not cowardly, backstabbing, power hungry people. And to all you members who complained, and backed out on me last minute? I'd still get banned again to bring it up. It was the right thing to do. But I wish you'd all stop being such cowards, because if more people weren't...maybe the issue would have been fixed rather than me getting banned for being the 'voice' for all of us. :)
