Not all Slytherins are jackasses. Not all Slytherins are purists. Not all Slytherins would stab their mother in the back just for the sheer fun of 'looking out for number one.'

And I could really just shank JKR for saddling us with that stereotype. You know, in a metaphysical sense. )

harry potter, dumbass, characterization fail

This. So many times, this; I am so sick and tired of people using Slytherin as a short hand for 'evil' or assuming that any even vaguely antagonistic character must be Slytherin. I once had a Ravenclaw character rejected on the grounds that he was 'Too antagonistic' and was told to try apping him for Slytherin. Needless to say, I did not bother re-applying.

They'd hate my Ravenclaw, then. She's a pure-blood supremacist who ended up getting the Dark Mark after she graduated (designed for a MWPP-era RP), but she still valued knowledge over ambition.

Yeah, mine was similar in a way; pure-blood supremacist, though not above using people of 'lower' blood. He was quite ambitious, but only insofar as it pertained to hording knowledge to prove that he was better (read: cleverer) than everyone else.

It seems like Ravenclaws are the second best house to get your Death Eaters. I had a character who I gender-swapped between games who was a purist and a crazy on par with some of his/her fellow DEs (not everyone kills and mutilates their dad after catching him with a Muggle girl).

I kind of want to play a Gryffindor DE now who isn't Peter Pettigrew.

I can only imagine what they would have said to my Hufflepuff, who was very loyal to his family. His Voldemort-supporting, bigoted family.

Yeah... If memory serves, just about every character on that forum was a flanderised extreme of the one trait most associated with their house. I don't know why I bothered apping at all, really. In my defence, I was younger and stupider back then.

There are far too many forums like that... *sigh*

Never did get to RP a Slytherin. Did get one to rethink her view on muggles after my muggle-born Ravenclaw proved himself to be the best duelist in their squad.

I always did want to play a Slytherin whose attitude was "Holy crap! Have you seen what this muggle tech can do? I'm getting myself a *gun*!"

That's the only sensible response of a Slytherin discovering guns. :D

Imagine the looks on their faces when they find grenades.

"Dude! These are mechanical, not electronic. We can use these."

I'm almost positive I read an interview somewhere in which JKR said that if a wizard with a wand and a muggle with a gun ever squared off, she'd bet on the muggle. But just try and tell that to a game when you want to play the revenge seeking mother of a murdered muggleborn. (*sigh* Mrs. Creevy. I'll never find a home for you.)

PoA actually had the Daily Prophet explaining what a gun was.
