On age and ability.

Reminded last night of a certain trend, I feel it necessary to let something out. I may have voiced such thoughts before, but when one's character is several centuries old, has been active in all that time and is supposed to have all sorts of experiences to draw upon, one should act the part. The average immortal(for lack of a better word) that I'd ( Read more... )

I usually get around this by having the character be from a world with different time (one year for them is twenty-something years for us) so those characters still have a normal amount of experience (unless they get mixed into our world. Then things get tricky).

For ones that have long lifespans (vampires, for example...), I like to have a ton of experiences/memories from different points in their life built up to pull from, and generally having a basic knowledge of said memories helps with coming up with new experiences.

They can have their "lived so long to do X" characters, but they need to have a list of sources/memories/what have you to pull from and then have a way to organize it to keep it consistent.

For example, I have a near-immortal character who hates most men due to a lifetime of bad relationships (not all were bad and she recognizes not all men are bad; relationships are just not worth her time anymore due to a bunch of bad eggs). I keep specific aspects of the failed relationships in mind (some cheated on her, some were cowards, some simply left, some used her) along with the few good ones (he was nice but not for her, he died, he could never be more than a friend, etc.). Knowing how she handled those relationships gives me a nice well to draw from in terms of how she sees and handles men now.

These people can do the same by having specific battles, tactics, wins, and loses that their characters went through in mind. Along with the knowledge of the same things in-general for people who would use them against them...

Show, not tell. Wiki/Google/whatever if you need to. But tacking on a trait does nothing until you show other players it deserves to be there. Sheesh, these people would probably be better off playing regular teenagers.
