Mine are schizophrenia, homosexuality, homophobia, and drunkenness. If your character is a schizo and is ~*super cool*~ because of it, you're doing it wrong. Nobody has fun with that shit. If your character is gay and all they can do is cry and have emotional sex, you're doing it wrong.
Every once in awhile I pick up homophobic characters in games I know are full of gay characters, just to balance it out. You'll never guess how many players think that homophobic character = homophobic player 9_6

THIS. I'm a yaoi roleplayer, but every once in a while, I'll pick up a homophobic character, and people will jump all over me about "THAT'S SO INSENSITIVE AND RUDE." What, to balance things out?
I would love that to happen in my RP! love it like piiiieee.
The only homophobic character is sadly player influenced and then the player is just so horribly confused when my one completely confused as to his sexuality character doesn't like it when the other character makes snide comments about him being gay.
For reals. I don't even pick up ones who throw rocks or beat gay people, I just have them comment on entries talking about gay sex (or whatever) with my character being grossed out. I get IMs from players not even involved in the discussion telling me it's insensitive and offensive that my character ~*shock*~ isn't completely open-minded or accepting of everyone. :/
Exactly! My homophobic characters aren't violently homophobic - they're just generally uncomfortable with homosexuals, and depending on the character, they may believe it's just morally wrong. They occasionally might say something offensive without realizing it is, in fact, offensive.
But the reaction they get OOC, no matter what they're like apart from that ONE TRAIT, is exactly the same they'd get if they WERE violently homophobic.
Though I don't see why so many people would jump all over a character just because they disagree with homosexuality. Everyone's entitled to an opinion, it doesn't make them insensitive or close-minded.
Since I largely play characters from settings that are kind of medieval-ish (not really set on Earth, but like, fantasy settings?) I tend to think it'd be realistic for them to be unused to homosexuality. So when there's blatant gay going on, they're often a little uncomfortable or confused. And since it's something they've never encountered before, they don't know what an acceptable reaction is, and they can come off as pretty rude by today's standards.
Though it thankfully hasn't happened to me at all, I really feel for you guys who've had people whine at you for having characters ICly be insensitive about that stuff. Just... ugggh character opinion =/= player opinion D:
