Just doesn't care anymore

This rider used to have a solid position and a very admirable attitude with her horses but I feel like now she just kinda flings things together and puts it up on youtube without a second thought. Her legs slide around all over the place and she jabs her horse in the flanks with her spurs. What makes this bad_riding worthy isn't the fact that her ( Read more... )

I don't know this girl, or her horse, and I do think there are very valid points being made about jumping a young horse, but I also wanted to put in my $.02, as they differ slightly with the general consensus so far. :)

Personally, I think the girl rode the horse quite well. He is obviously green, but appears quite willing and doesn't look afraid -- just very alert. I always tell my students to put their hands on the neck when they jump greenies simply because you don't know what the horse is going to do (where they are going to take off, how they are going to jump, etc.) and that is the best way to ensure you don't end up catching the horse in the mouth. His tempo is unsteady, but again, that is because he is green and I actually applaud the rider for not trying to force him to keep a canter or a trot. Instead she allows him to do both and he does not look paniced or overwhelmed. At one point he even did a flying lead change without being asked. Her contact, for the most part, is quiet and steady. She is spreading her hands out before the fences to let him see the fence and guide him to it -- something else I always encourage my own riders to do with a green/nervous horse.

Her posting is unsteady and looks a bit behind the motion, as another poster pointed out she is riding in a dressage saddle and her stirrups are quite long. A few times her releases could have been a bit bigger; she should anticipate that a greenie is going to overjump and in my mind it is always better to over release than not release enough. Like I said, I don't know what this girl does with this horse on a regular basis or how she acts around the farm, but overall I would say this is a first successful outing for both horse and rider.
