i have been bothered by this girl for a while now, and i just need to vent. if you like yeebabopeeba, probably don't bother clicking the cut

K so I read the related post and discovered some differences in terminology from there to here.
It appears he was trying to get the horse to amble (foxtrot?). With most free-legged pacers (gaited horses?) this is really easy. I fail to understand why he's having such a problem.
Take a look at this. Looks like the gait foxtrotters usually perform is akin to what this diagram calls "jogging". In other breeds, this would be considered a fault. However, the horse in the original post could clearly tölt, or rack, or whatever you like to call it. But as you can see, it's very tense and tending towards pace in most of the pictures. That must be as far from foxtrot as you can come.
Yeah, looking at that I'd say ambling = pacey tolt (can't be bothered with ascii).
The amble that people seek here isn't particularly a show gait, more of a fast way of getting places comfortably for shepherds on large stations. A good ambler is very valuable, but pacing is uncomfortable so although free-legged pacers make the best amblers, maintaining the amble is the desired gait.
(a good ambler can amble at about cantering speed)
Oh, jesus. I'm with you on this. The pictures of the baby in the roundpen were the most depressing thing I've ever seen. I can't even imagine treating my horses like that.
I know there really, really are conscientious western riders out there, but crap like this really proves my suspicions beyond a reasonable doubt. Every trainwreck abuse case I've ever seen or helped reschool was originally ridden western. Period. I suspect that these kinds of "methods" are more common than anyone supposes. 75% macho, 25% asshat "trainers" and 100% ignorant bastard clients.
And that brat on the pony? My pony club instructor would have skinned that kid alive for a fraction of that, back in the day.
That is so fucking screwed up. I'd seen all those posts, but never really realized they were by the same person.
I did enjoy your 'comments' regarding the girl's captions. I seriously laughed.
I would love to see him try and ride my horse like that. He'd get that guy off so fast, it wouldn't even be funny. Geez. That man is so screwed up. Seriously.
Oh. And, if you haven't already, post this thing over at stupidpetowers. I think they'd probably enjoy it :D
I filtered out that community because the majority of the posts are huge spams of boring, bad quality pictures. However, I now read the post with the paint mare and her colt, and I wonder how she can mistake their fear for anger? I already commented on the fox trotter, which looks extremely tense and agitated in most of the pictures, which is why it is not showing any desireable gaits most of the time.
that's it right there...this girl seems to be under the mistaken impression that the horses are 'angry' or bad'....horses don't generally get angry or bad...for the most part that's a fear manisfestation. UGH.
i just never commented on those entries. scary scary.
The one with the foxtrotter especially. Not only is he hauling on the poor horse, he's doing it in a big RUSTY gross looking bit. I mean c'mon.
and the picture of the blood covered barb wire was a tad over the top. oh and the rope on the foals ANKLE. talk about a disaster waiting to happen. OH WAIT it already did. at least the baby didn't get physically injured.
i know! who would post a picture like that??? it's like posting a picture of a crumpled bloody motorcycle or a house that's been hit by a tornado or something. :x
On the rusty bit thing ... This may sound crazy but rusty bits are basically sweet iron. Horses actually like the taste of a rusty bit. It's sort of the original idea behind making horses salivate more.
The rope on the ankle thing. The guy looked like he was doing it all wrong, but this is something to practice with your horse. But never like that. Not tied up so the horse can't get away and so the rope can cut through the skin. No, that's ugly.
Not trying to be disagreeable because a lot of those pictures showed off a man who has been to a few clinics and has soarly misunderstood the practices, but I just want to point out that these things can be done correctly.
i agree. there were things he was doing that, when done correctly, i would have no problem with. it was just the fact that he was doing EVERYthing completely WRONG, and the girl was DEFENDING him, that pissed me off. :)

What is he trying to achieve with the pacer? If it's stopping the pacing, he failed.
And, my first thought was "Jeez dude, do something about those docks!"
I've seen some of those methods used before, but it was a long time ago and I would've thought people had got a bit wiser these days.
