Penelope tore off the train to her dress and ripped the adorned barrett from her hair, tossing it aside. She was exasperated beyond her own endurance. She couldn't take anymore! The pokes, the stares; feeling like a monster, making Edward almost marry her; living a lonely sheltered life where playing outdoors as a child was only ever a dream! She was tired of this day, tired of her mother, tired of being made to feel like she didn't belong anywhere. Why couldn't everybody just leave her alone!
Mother"Penelope," she said, knocking on her bedroom door. "It's not too late.
Penelope"Go away, mother!" she cried..
Mother"Honey, just think about what you're doing. This is the moment we have worked so hard for," she tried, coaxing her encouragingly.
Penelope"I said go away!"
Mother"Sweetheart, please!" she yelled, banging on the door. "We are one yes away from a whole new life! A whole new you."
Penelope"But I don't want a whole new me, mother!" Penelope shouted back, twisting the gown of her skirt in an effort to get it out of the way.
Mother"Sweetheart, please, please," she implored, hitting the door again.
Penelope"I like myself the way I am," she said, her voice soft and trembling; her words honest. And with the last syllable, she was knocked backwards by a force unseen, falling through the air while vivid flashes of the past came to mind through her memories and the memories of stories told to her.
The tree the witch stood in front of when she cursed the next female, Wilhern heir. The dreadful day she was born. Her fake death and cremation. Swinging in her room as a teenager, just as she did as a child because she was not allowed to play outdoors. She was so lonely, so sad.
Everyday wishing to be a normal girl. Wishing to smell the air outside. Wishing for friends to play with...
Falling and falling until she hit the hard wood of her floor, rendered unconscious.
MotherFinally managing to get into her daughter's room, Jessica Wilhern rushed over to her and slowly leaned down, looking over her in shocked awareness. "Penelope?"
PenelopeSlowly coming to, Penelope, confused and worried, worked her way up, bracing herself with one hand to the floor while the other lifted to her face, to her nose. Eyes wide, she whispered on a heavy breath: "Mom?"
MotherIn awestruck wonder, both mother and daughter couldn't find the words to speak. And they couldn't keep their fingers from touching her new nose.
