Truthfully, Dr. Tillotson (Barbra doubled the wrong letters, when she was telling me how Dr. Whited said to spell it, lol) Told me absolutely no more than Dr. Rodeffer did.
But, the huge difference was, she did a thorough exam, minus the temp reading, as Berry tried to kill her, no matter how slowly she went -the mare has backend issues, and doesn't like anyoen near her butt.
Anyways, She wanted the complete rundown of the year we've had her, excercise she was getting, when she stopped getting it, and why (January, and b/c I was on crutches) when she dropped the weight, how was her movement when she started dropping weight, how much feed was she getting (her jaw dropped, when I told her how much, and though she didnt' voice an opinion, her jaw dropped even further when I told her the vet told me to give more), and when we vaccinated her, when she was wormed, all that good stuff.
I told her Berry's stifle(s) have always locked, she's always been stiff onher backside, doesnt' bend phenominally, throws her weight on her forehand, a lot, the odd cough, the lymphatic swelling, the fact that at first I thought it was muscle waste from lack of use, yadda yadda, the lab results, the worming regime, all that.
Berry actually coughed, right in our faces, to back me up, lol. Which prompted a thorough neck/throat exam.
Told her about her stifle popping out, and having to bute her, for two days.
(now, I know that several people are going to jump on that description, but we all know what I mean, so don't)
Teeth checked, sharp, but we're gonna do them in August-ish -not enough to interfere with her eating, which it's not.
She had me trot her in a straight line, several times, with her watching from both directions, then she took her, and pivoted her, til I thought they both should fall in a heap from dizziness (can we say I got a lesson in how an equine should go) then went the other way.
The end result is, we all agree I should've switched their feed a long time ago (I told her when I was comparing bags, and saw that while grain says to feed up to 10% [country acres 10%] the strategy says to never feed more than 1% which should've told me something.
Anyway, the end result is, she said as far as she was concerned, I'd done everything exactly right, in regards to buteing, when her stifle messed up, giving her hte probiotics in march, worming her the way I did, switching feed, and that there is no clinical reason for the cough, jsut dust, which I can go along with, and the exact opposite of what Dr. Rodeffer said, who said not to work her at all, until we got her weight up, and Jo (his tech) who told me my lunging routine (5min W, 20 T, reverse 5W, 20T) and over rails set up, and once or twice a week over low jumps was too much for any horse (LOL) Dr. Tillotson said that that was absolutely the best thing to do, and to work on her.
Also, whereas I was previosly advised NOT to lunge her at the slightest sign of discomfort, Dr. Tolloston told me to work up til she was slightly uncomfortable, and if she need to be buted that night, so be it, that we have got to get her backend into shape, and it may take some discomfort, which, having wrenched my knee, I totally understand that.
Basically, she said it seems to her that when I became unable to excersize her, she did not excersize herself, at all, and became quite uncomfortable, and her body was not pleased with this, then throw in the other stresses she had to go thru, what with family problems, and my having to be gone, it jsut totally disrupted her system, which is jsut now getting back into shape.
She spent a whole friggin hour -I dont' think my other vet has spent that much time, total.
And she said there's definitely some backend issues, but she believes with a regular regime back in place Berry will be sound enough for what riding we do, and that any corrective surgery would probably do no more good than muscle to compensate for the weak stifle.
So, she told me no more, but told me a lot...and I'm very pleased with her.
