Hi everyone, I finally rejoined this community now that I have the time, and I am so excited to see it so active :)

This might be a bit off topic, but I'll cut to the chase with a question

This is the kind of thing I like, as I know you backyarders can understand.  I like to just get on, ride all day long going nowhere in particular, and wherever we end up, that is where we are.  Dirt roads, deer trails, fields, rivers, it doesn't matter; if we can blaze a trail, we're going on it.

Case in point: riding on snowmobile trails in the middle of nowhere (imagine the wtf looks on the faces of passing snowmobilers when they see a herd of horses 3 miles into the woods).

I recently moved  to California and now I have a problem.  I miss these weekend rides from back home, and it seems like the only opportunity I have to even see a horse around here is at some english riding stable that would probably charge me more than I am worth to sit my butt in a saddle. How do I go about finding people to ride with? I am craving a fun backcountry ride with equally fun and laid back people, not stuffing myself into some britches and riding around in circles :(
I thought about using craigslist, but I don't know what I'd post: "hi I'm a stranger but I miss my horse so let me use one of yours and we can go ride".  It's such an impersonal place, how do I find the horse people (the nice ones)?  If this sounds like a dumb question, just enjoy my pictures :)
