Boy do I feel lucky that my new horse is fat right about now.
Indiana is in a drought too and hay is much harder to come by than I ever thought it would be. I've spent the entire week looking in about 6 different counties for any hay that might be available. I called one place while I was on the road (just happened to have the trailer) and thought I had gotten lucky when he said he had 20 bales I could have for $50. Yeah, it's not enough, but it's better than none! I get there and it turns out he has 20 ROUND bales, which doesn't help me one bit. *sigh* I just about stopped randomly at some other place where I saw them cutting hay, but I couldn't find the road that took me up that hill and it was already so late. The barn manager is doing her best to find hay enough for everyone to go in on, but she's already been turned down by two people who had thought they would have enough. If Tammy does find someone, I am so taking off from work to go bale hay! It will be so much cheaper that way!
If I don't find hay within two weeks, I'm out of food for Will. He doesn't get any grain ... he's too fat. I can turn him out to pasture full-time, which will happen if this situation keeps up. But I might also decide to substitute. I'm thinking either alfalfa cube or pellets. Maybe the cubes/pellets in the morning and the hay at night. Or maybe flakes of hay in the morning and pasture at night.
Any other suggestions? I'd like to give him forage, but we may be short on options here.
Fortunately, Dash and Sam are in a better situation. Mom and Dad have a regular supplier, and they need so little hay for the two horses. They got 75 good bales. To make it one year, they'll only need one more round of 75, but that second round may be tough to come by. They have an 8 acre field that is just grass right now and they are going to put that to hay. Maybe it will be ready by the second or third cutting. That will help all of us out!
