It had taken Leslie what seemed like ages from the time she found out Dani was representing Nick to get her guts up enough to tell her what she knew about him. For the better part of 10 years, she'd managed to somehow push the memory of the man she'd thought she knew to the back of her mind. They'd lived together for years, and the facade that Neil had always kept up had fooled everyone, including his sister, for so long sometimes that even Leslie questioned herself.
But she'd moved on, or so she thought. She'd buried the knowledge of who her brother was deep inside, knowing full well that no one would have believed her if she'd told them anyway. Neil was the darling of the family. Brilliant, ambitions, making all A's in pre-law the last time she'd seen him. But what Leslie knew wouldn't allow her to feel the same way about her brother that the rest of her family did, and she had to leave.
Any other time, waiting at the airport for Dani to show up would be cause for the woman to be in a fantastic mood. Dani wasn't just her attorney. She was also a dear friend, and someone Leslie trusted implicitly, with everything. But this wasn't any other time, and things weren't anywhere near exciting and joyous this time around.
She'd never dealt with it. It had hit her full on when she made all the connections, from Neil's death at the hands of his husband, to the fact that said husband was Dani's client, and apparently, relative, to the fact that, like it or lump it, she had to tell what she knew, and the strong, confident journalist had spent several nights alone crying in her apartment as she faced age old scars she'd thought were healed many times over.
Spotting her friend at the baggage claim, Leslie made her way over, forcing a smile that she knew as well as anyone Dani would see right through. She was a lawyer. It was her job to see through it. "Hey, lady!" she said, her smile still in place. "Good to see you made it back from Vegas without an Elvis wedding."
