I’m not sure how this newest “Kev” miniseries fits in with the rebooted Wildstorm Universe or, for that matter, if it does at all (maybe the fact that they dropped the Authority label here means something), but chances are the readers of this book won’t care too much about it anyway. Were it not for the characters’ past, this series could take place in virtually any “universe” and still have exactly the same impact, if this first issue is to be any indication.
An amusing little incident from Kev’s past comes back to haunt him this issue and he’s driven from the United Kingdom altogether. A friend of his, meanwhile, crosses some of the wrong people and winds up way over his head. I was sort of blasé about the earlier Kev miniseries, but the first issue of this one impressed me a bit. It has more of the Garth Ennis wit that made me love Preacher so much, and it’s nice to see it exercised here.
Speaking of Preacher, Carlos Ezquerra returns to the art with this new miniseries, and like before, he’s really doing a strong Steve Dillon theme with his artwork. It’s fine for what it is, but it’s so similar that one winds up questioning if he’s really blazing a trail for himself or just sort of following what came before.
This is, so far, an improvement on Kev’s earlier adventures. His fans should be pleased.
