Max couldn’t pin the exact moment that he began to feel something for Jude. Of course, the feeling in his pants had started when he had been sitting in the room that Jude was “bunking down” in at the school. Why else would he have invited him back to The Nursery? But, looking back on everything that had passed between the two, it was hard to think of the precise instant that he had begun to feel more than just a purely sexual attraction. It could have been when he and Jude were heading to New York. It could have been while they had shared a room in Sadie’s apartment. It could even have been when he had felt that small stab of jealousy in seeing his sister in bed with Jude, Lucy being curled up against his side. In his mind’s eye, Max could see Jude’s face as clear as if he were standing right in front of him. The chocolate-colored hair that hung low into his dark eyes, which seemed to see into Max’s very soul every time he looked at him.

Of course, Jude did not know this. He hadn’t told him before going off to war because he was so obviously entangled in Max’s sister’s arms. He didn’t want to intrude. But now that he was back, and Lucy had told him about the breakup and the fact that Jude had been deported, Max felt, more than ever, that the feelings he had for Jude was deeper than anything he had felt before for anyone. His emotions ran wild and untamed at the mere thought of him and there was not much else to think about while lying in a hospital bed. The drugs he was getting for the pain helped some, but in the moments when he was fully awake, his thoughts continually found their way back to Liverpool, and what Jude could possibly be doing there. Max had missed the train, and he felt miserable.
