Judey Judey

1. Memphis, Tennesee

Jude, brushed back a bit of hair the dangled over his eyes while he sketched a drunk fiend of a friend plastered on the couch with his taxi cab hat misplaced on the top of his head. His hair, though rather a bright blonde had become rather dirty and was gristly on his chin. His shirt had been buttoned lazily. His pants were almost halfway down, revealing some white boxers between the edge of his shirt and his pants. There was a suspicious stain around on the flap above the zipper. His hands were still limply wrapped an empty bottle, and his other fingers barely attached to a dead stick of weed.

Jude smiled to himself, studying his friend with a piece of nu pastel. He normally didn’t like to work with color and when he did, it was normally limited between two or three. But seeing Max rest like that inspired him to draw his personality. After all, Max was very colorful, always approaching life with arms wide open.

Jude put a hand over his mouth to resist a snicker as he remembered the time they all got incredibly pissed at Princeton and his silly antics in the bowling alley, sliding down the alley with his hands way up high in the air. He went back to shading in his peaceful look, when he glanced up and realized that it wasn’t the same expression as he had drawn.

It was a tense look, brows furrowed, and teeth clinched. His friend’s hand twitched. Jude soon remembered his friend no longer approached the life the same way anymore.

SMASH! The glass bottle fell to the floor and broke, and Max started gripping the bed, accidentally kicking the ashtray off the table, and screaming incoherently.

“AAAAAH!”

Jude rushed to Max’s side, dropping the sketchpad to the floor, and stepping on his nu pastels, leaving bright color patches on the floor. He stumbled, onto the bed, then crawled up, grabbing mask by the shoulders as the poor boy started gripping his face like it was melting off his face.

“AAH! AHH!”

“MAX! Max! Wake up!” shouted Jude, shaking him. Max was beginning to sob, and Jude took him by both sides of the head and pressed his face close. “Max, listen to me, Wake up! It‘s Judy! I‘m here!”

Max opened his eyes, fast, but had to blink a few times before he finally stopped and only continued in gasps for breath. Jude was breathing hard, too, frightened and disturbed, but he knew nothing could compare to what had been going on in Max’s head.

“You’re here,” whispered Max.

“I’m here,” replied Jude. Max sighed and leaned on Jude’s shoulder in reliefe and exhaustion, and he planted a kiss on his friend’s bristly face and wrapped his arms around Max’s frame, rocking him back and forth, whispering “shhh, it’s okay.”

“You’re gonna be a great mother some day, Judy,” Max lightly joked. A smiled curled on Jude’s lips, stroking back Max’s hair.

“It’s okay, soldier boy, mum’s gonna keep you safe,” Jude said softly, kissing the top of his head. Max was quiet for a moment, being held in Jude’s arms, when he quietly heard Max begin.

“Yesterday,” choked Max, clearing his throat. “All my troubles seemed so far away.”

“It’ll be okay,” said Jude, attempting to comfort him.

“Now it looks as though they’re here to stay,” replied Max. Jude pulled him away and his head swooped back like dead weight.

“But you’re here now, doesn’t that mean something?” asked Jude, looking into those blue eyes that seemed paler than ever before. He wondered how the friend he loved so much lied beneath those silver pools.

“It means nothing, Jude.”

“I don’t believe so.”

“But oh, I believe in yesterday,” said Max. He pulled away, setting his feet over the bedside, resting his elbows on his knees. “Suddenly… I'm not half the man I used to be
there's a shadow hanging over me. Oh, yesterday came suddenly.”

Jude stared at Max, not knowing what to say or what to do. He wanted to hold Max, but he knew he’d only push him away. He wanted to tell Max the future would be bright, but he knew Max would not agree. All he knew was that he couldn’t leave Max. If Max were to hate him, if Lucy were to hate him, if all they’re friends wanted him out, if the country wanted him gone, even if the entire earth wanted him off this bloody planet, he knew it would never be enough to make leave his side. He loved Max in a way it could never expressed in words.

“Anytime at all, all you’ve got to do is call,” replied Jude, slowly. “And I’ll be there.”

Max looked up at him, surprised.

“If the sun has faded away, I'll try to make it shine. There is nothing I won't do, If you need a shoulder to cry, I hope it will be mine, Call me tonight and I'll come tonight,” replied Jude with a contagious smile that began to spread along Max’s lips.

“Do you need anybody?” asked Jude, raising his eyebrows and giving him that look. Max grinned wildly, and tackled Jude to the mattress. Jude broke into laughter, and Max sang in reply. “I need somebody to love!”

A flutter of some kind of happiness occurred in his chest, and Jude knew he had to get out from under Max. He wrestled him enough to break free and wriggle off the bed, with a big smile on his face.

“Could it be anybody?!” asked Jude, batting his eyelashes and holding one hand behind his head and another on his hips, striking a feminine pose. Max started laughing hysterically.

“I want somebody to love!” laughed Max on the bed, rolling over on his back.

“What’s going on?” asked Lucy, getting back from work, early, dropping her keys on the table as Jude came dashing into kitchen, and ducked into the pantry, closing the door. Max rushed in, out of breath, with a huge grin on his face.

“What do I do when my love is away?” he called out. Lucy smirked, raising an eyebrow.

“Does it worry you to be alone?” she asked, motioning slyly to the coat closet. Max grew a mischievous look and tapped his fingers together, tiptoeing to the closet.

“How do I feel by the end of the day?” he called out, and swung open the door, only to be greated by an ironing board that hit him straight on the head.

“Are you sad because you‘re on your own!?” laughed Lucy and Jude as he appeared out of the pantry with a “ta-dah” stance.

“No, I get by with a little help from my friends!” growled Max, chasing after Jude once again, jumping over furniture, and scaring the poor house cat, and nearly knocking over everything that wasn’t glued to the furniture.

Jude manages to pick up a left over joint from a coffee table ashtray.

“Gets high with a little help from his friends!” Jude says, taking a drag

“Guys, take this outside!” Lucy shouts, getting a little aggravated after chasing after both of them, trying to prevent things from breaking and falling over.

“Oh I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends,” Max manages to get out as he has Jude in a choke hold

“Right, just don’t make out all over the rug okay, Sadie just got that cleaned from when the Eleanor spit up on it,” added Lucy, stroking the grey cat in her arms. Max finally let go of Jude in exchange for the joint. Jude rubbed his neck, and then gave the feline a smile as he leaned down to pet her in Lucy’s arms.

“I’m sorry, Miss Rigby, did our antics frighten you?”

“Mm, girls and their kitties,” sighed Max, resting on the couch.

“I’m sorry if I care about God’s living creatures,” scoffed Lucy with a playful smile.

“Mm, was talking to Liverpool over there,” Max motioned to Jude with his left hand.

“Oh chuckle chuckle, ha ha,” Jude replied sarcastically, then smiled as he made his way to the couch Max was relaxed in. “Oh, but who’s the biggest cat in the jungle, eh mate?”

Jude made a playful *rawr* with his hands. Max’s face got incredibly red. “Don’t go there, man.”

Jude leaned close to his ear and whispered a sultry “Meow,” and then quickly took a seat in a nearby chair. He noticed how Max quickly took some Lucy’s knitting and set it over his lap. Jude was confused enough to not care, and he picked up an old art magazine Lucy had brought home to him that someone had left at the restaurant. Just as was about to show Max his latest fascination, the door swung open, and an angry dark skinned man in a tight tucked in shirt came marching in with a guitar on his back.

“Jojo, baby, it’ll be fun! Come on!” A tall woman with curly brown hair came rushing in after him in high heel shoes and a gorgeous dress.

“Ain’t no way in hell I’m heading down south!”

“C’mon, baby!”

The door to their bedroom shut behind them with the sound of the shade yanked down. Jude and Max gave each other a curious look, and Lucy looked incredibly confused.

“What do you think that was about?”

“I don’t know, dearie,” remarked Jude.

“I know what it’s about.”

“No, you don’t,” scoffed Lucy, setting Eleanor on the floor to eat her cat food.

“Oh, but go ahead mate, tell us your theory?” smirked Jude, setting his feet at the edge of his seat, getting comfortable. Max pretended to ponder.

“Okay, uh let me think, uh, sex. Sex. And more sex.”

Jude had to resist from giggling because Lucy was giving Max that playful condescending look.

“Max, are you just too lazy to get your mind out of the gutter or what?” remarked Lucy, placing her hands on her hips. Jude liked the way she acted around Max. She always seemed to be more beautiful, and funny, and smart when she and Max spent time together. Too bad he and Lucy were better as friends now than as a couple.

“No, I’m not to lazy. And frankly, my mind prefers the gutter. It’s a whole lot more content in there than it is anywhere else,” said Max, setting the joint down. Jude thought it was odd that he’d put a joint down. He must think something interesting enough is about to happen.

“I know where my mind is,” said Jude with sly smile.

“Oh don’t you start, too, Jude-”

“Huff, huff,” A young, skinny Asian girl came stumbling into the room, looking red and out of breath than ever in a loose outfit and jeans.

“What, couldn’t use the bathroom window?” asked Jude, with a smile.

“Oh…shut up…” she rolled her eyes. Prudence fell against the couch, and kicked Max to make him scoot over enough for her to lie down.

“You okay?” asked Lucy in a worried tone.

“No. Nobodies okay,” replied Prudence between breaths.

“You know what’s going on between Jojo and Sadie?” asked Max.

“Yeah. Jojo got a letter from his Grandma, they want him to come home for thanksgiving,” spoke up Prudence.

“What, Jojo has a past!?” mocked Max, suddenly knitting.

“Alright, you American beast, let the lady continue,” said Jude, swatting Max with a rolled up magazine. Max whimpered, and Jude felt a little jump up his spine. He didn’t have time to think though, because at that moment, Sadie burst into the room with a huge smile on her gorgeous, exotic face.

“Hey, guys, guess where we’re going?!”

They all stared up at her, blankly.

“MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE! HOME OF THE BLUES!
