Back in the 1920s, Breckenridge was a booming oil town. Although only around 5,000 people now, back then it was close to 60,000. Everywhere you looked you could see oil derricks.
Across from our courthouse is an oil derrick that I got to install Christmas lights on this year. The derrick is 87 feet tall, and with all four sides and each leg lined with lights, it and has a little over 1,770 feet of lights on it... that's one-third of a mile of lights! Now, given there's one LED every inch, that comes out to be 21,240 lights!
And just in case you were wondering, it took 4 full days (32 hours) of working to get all four sides lit... and roughly 20-25 complete trips (up AND down) to get it all done.
